I am in want of another firearm. i would really like a nice single shot .22, because, well, they are incredibly fun, and dirt cheap to shoot. but there doesnt seem to be that many good ones available. I dont want a bolt action because there is no reason to buy one and not get more than one shot out of the same action. i'm looking for stuff more like these:

Ithaca Model 49 Lever action single shot(i think) was what really got me started on this, man it was fun to shoot. but the extracter didnt work all the time and i know this example has led an easy life? is there anything similar to this of good quality?

http://www.savagearms.com/30g.htm <<< is this worth $240? this is pretty much exactly what i want, design wise. i've never shot one.

does winchester still make guns? what happened to the Low wall and why was it $1000.

the low wall/ steven's favorite are the style i'm looking for.

So, recommend and discuss single shot .22's that ARNT BOLT ACTION. and preferably really cheap.

the ithaca can bre helped along by polishing the chamber. it helps the brass not stick so bad. a oversized q tip with polish chucked in a deremel will do the trick. the extractor trip lever isnt broken is it?

henry 22

If you like the lever action 22, I suggest the Henry lever action 22 rifle. It comes in a couple different grades and won't bust your budget. It is however, somewhat higher than say a 10/22 auto. If you plan to keep it for a long time and want to invest, the Henry might be a good choice for you.

I have held/looked-over the Savage "Stevens Favorite" and it seemed pretty good for a new production rifle with a low price tag. I'd recommend putting an aperture rear sight on it, but that's my first thought on most rifles. I've read a write-up or two on these and they said accuracy was reasonable.

As for no bolts, if you can get ahold of an old Remington 510 for a reasonable price on Gunbroker.com, you might could get a good rifle less expensively than you'd get that 30G for. And the odds are it'd be more accurate than the reviews I read on the 30G.

I'm not saying the 30G's not a good old design, but there's the question of what you intend to do with it.

The Ithaca I recall of the type you're talking about... I reblued a .410 barrel for a guy. The receiver is aluminum. It was rough.

I've looked at those Henry's before too. They seem like a good deal and I've been thinking of getting one or two of those.

I do not quite understand, you want a single shot 22lr but not a bolt action becuase there is no reason to buy one and not get more than one shot out of the same action but you are willing to get a lever action. Does not the same hold true with that as well.

In your case I would get a break open, like a H&R or a Rossi, both can be had new for about a $100.00 or just a little over that. Used they can be had for around $75.00.

I have to say though you are really limiting yourself by not looking at alot of the older used bolt action 22lr, there are really some good deals on some great old guns out there.

Just read an article somewhere on a test being done on three single shots, two of which you mention... the stevens actually shot the tightest groups, but fit, finish, and trigger were all last. It was also the cheapest.

i have thought about a lever action, henry or other, and will probly end up with one before too long. I've shot the henry and really enjoy it. they're just plain fun.

I also already have a bolt action, a Marlin .22 Mag. its a good gun, but the ammo is not cheap enough.

i think i actually just want a more interesting action. the falling block design is really neat. thats why i'm asking about other options besides just a 10/22, CZ, and Henry, somthing more interesting/unique.

this gun's only purpose ever will be to shoot paper and wood.

also, i've read that article, i dont remember where, but i believe one of it's competitors was the Low Wall.

I had one of those too as my first .22. It was fun to shoot, but it didn't have an extractor and my thumb would be bleeding by the time I got 1/2 way through a brick of ammo.

the one i was shooting had an ejector that would pop 'em right up and i tried to catch it a few times. like i said, just wanting a fun gun.

I had the Stevens Model 89, which was the same rifle, never had the extractor prob

There are some Martini action, falling block, single shot rifles available.
Thad Scott Fine guns in Indianola, Mississippi had some last time I looked.
Not really cheap but interesting.

ah just buy a mossburg plinktin .22 under a 130bucks 10shot clip ah mines got a pistol grip but that took a while to find a regular ones still fun as hell if your down with the .22's i call them blatt blatta's in gansta term
.........if only i was gansta

My Dad has a bolt-action single-shot .22lr which he's had since he was a kid, which means it's at least 65 years old. Out to about 50yds it's the most accurate open sight rifle I've ever shot. He uses it to shoot crows, rabbits, snakes, and any other small critters that get too close to his garden. He'll shoot pine combs out the tops of 100ft high pine trees all day long and never miss a one.

This isn't what you wanted to hear, but the number of single shot .22s out there in great condition make them the pragmatic choice.........Essex

I can SURELY second the TC contender with a 10" Match target barrel... I have one, with a factory TC scope... and WHEW! is it ever accurate... it makes even a novice handgun shooter look good... (just ask my Girlfriend, who THINKS she is going to confiscate My TC match target unit!)

Want a rifle? this same barrel is available in 16" and 21" lengths, and the action screws right into a shoulder stock...

these guns are he** bent for goodlooking, and stylish, with GORGEOUS shiny deep black bluing too!

T/C's are getting up there out of my price range. although i could work on justifying one with the ol' many guns in one deal. I had been considering one, only in a large caliber like 45/70 or .44 in a pistol. just for fun.

you guys brought this thread back up just as i was trying to figure out what i would do to a 10/22 if i bought one of those. or what fun could be had with an AR7. or do i want to get a lever action because i know i need one. a simple bolt action could have me playing sniper. a 1911 is always nice. but BFR's can make noise. a GP100 is quite purposeful. a derringer would get me started on CCW'ing with some style. and a titanium revolver would do it better. but titanium isnt as cool as a classic colt(style) .45. those coach guns are all ways appealing. as is a 8 shot taurus .357. a .22 pistol would burn ammo well. and a Tommy gun is, well, just one of those things a guy's gotta do before he dies.

i dont know how you guys do this stuff..... i'm going to die a poor man.

dont expect any anouncements soon, this gun will be my reward if i pass my classes this semester. its good motivation. last semester it was the long awaited first pistol: the Single Six.

edit: i think this post helps show the problem of buying guns for no other purpose than entertainment. the only reason i buy these things is to put a smile on my face once in a while. and there are a lot of different things to make one smile.

Don't know whether or not they make one in .22, but you might look at a Ruger No. 1. It seems to meet everything else you want, and Ruger's are and have always been American, something that can't be said for everyone. Of course, you could always go with a Handi-Rifle.

Seancass Usually cheap (inexpensive) AND interesting to shoot do not go together.

But my thoughts for what they are worth. Ithaca model 49's are difficult to find in my neck of the woods. When they can be found I have seen them stickered for around $125-175 and that is in fair condition.

My recomendation would be to get a good older used single shot bolt action. But since you said you do not want a bolt gun then I second the previous post about seriously looking at either the Rossi or New England Firearms (NFE) single shot rifles. Of these two brands, the NEF would be my first choice.

Regards,
Rob

Recently I was at a local gun store and they had one of those single shot Ithaca lever guns. The only reason I recognized it was because my uncle has one he has had since a kid.....nifty action really.

The price was marked $75.....and for some reason I didnt buy it....Im really pissed at myself too.

Rossi Blued Single-shot .22s are on sale for $59.99 from CDNN.
