Subtitled : Steve gets blamed - again.
I was minding my own business, really. I was tossing a tennis ball to the Lab, and he was trying to wear out my arm, by having me continue to toss this ball.
Ladies shooting their shotguns, and having a good time. One lady puts up her shotgun, with that smirky grin ...
"Can I see and shoot your Shotgun please?" - The lady asked.
"Sure, you know you don't have to ask..."
My NEF Youth Model 20 ga single shot shotgun was in the bed of my truck. She snagged it, and with a variety of loads ranging from promo dove/ quail loads, to target load, #3 buckshot and slugs, she shot at a pattern board to get a idea of what this fixed modified choke would do.
Then she shot some other targets, from a portable clay trap, to some stationary targets and ...
"That thing is a lot of fun, shoots really great patterns and groups, easy to tote, and that factory recoil is not bad, not a Pach Decel, but not bad".
I knew at the moment she walked off she was smitten, so did the Black Lab, he looked at me, did that goofy grin he does, and turned his head like he does.
"You are going to get blamed again you do realize, oh well, either find me a treat or throw my slobbered tennis ball back out..."
Short time elapses...
"It is your fault I had to get one of them NEF, Youth, 20ga Shotguns".
I like the way folks try to be mad, they cannot, they are too busy smiling, grinning, laughing, snorting, chuckling...never fails.
"All right, since it is your fault and all, show me what all you do on a new shotgun".
Instead, I have decided my Mentors had the right idea, and since they made me, do this stuff, I feel it is only correct I pass forward as they passed to me...
I let my Lady friend , whom I instructed how to shoot, and whom is assisting another young lady to shoot, and I just [strike] Oversee [/strike] Mentor all this, let her do this.
Being the nice guy I am, I even arrange for not only the owner of this shotgun to be present, also this new to shotgun lady student.
I can sip coffee and mess with dawg, and Mentor at the same time - My Mentors did this - so this is how it is supposed to be done. Right? Right.
Recoil pad removed, Butt stock removed by undoing stock bolt, then the forearm removed by undoing the Phillips head screw. Metal and Wood separate.
Factory preservative is removed. First off squirt some Ballistol into action, into bore, all screws and let set a minute. This stuff just gets down and into everything.
Outside, with Nitrile Gllove, blast with generic brake cleaner, let set to dry.
Wood.
Johnson's Paste wax in the yellow can. This gets applied to inside stock bolt hole, end grains of wood, forearm and all. We apply once, let sit, wipe off and apply again to make sure all spots taken care off. Also applied to the screws that hold Recoil pad on, and outside of wood.
Metal.
The stock bolt gets RIG (Rust Inhibiting Grease), as does the Phillips screw, and the hole it fits into.
RIG +P is applied to hinge pin.
Ballistol is used for lube for action and chamber/ bore.
Assemble, dry fire a few times. Then we do another Johnson's treatment over the whole gun again. Just seals up everything for sure, Metal and Wood is protected.
RIG works great for the metal. Just we are wee bit short on RIG, and Johnson's works well. Ballistol - we got to using it since we are around kids, and it is non toxic and the simple fact is, this stuff just works, and is so slick.
Being the Mentor and all, I watch as the ladies try this new gun out, pattern it, and all that. Of course I knew, it was going to mirror mine. That is why I am the Mentor. I have messed with enough of these ( other things) to know a thing or three.
Being the nice guy I am, I asked to borrow this gun, and to let another lady we all know, mess with one as she asked.
Oh yeah, all I did was drop it off since I was going that way and ...you guessed it-
