Just saw a beautiful new 6" Colt New Frontier .22LR / .22 Magnum up for bid on a gun sales web site.

I'd appreciate any information / comments ya'll might have in regards to how a one compares to the other. (Single Six Vs The New Frontier)

Thanks

No comparison -- if you're intersted in resale value. A colt will increase dramatically in value (and this one certainly has!) If I could get them for the same price, I'd definitely take the Colt. Even at twice the price.

But for everyday carry in the woods and general plinking and small game, they're about the same.

Colt!

See if it has the "safety" that is exposed when you open the loading gate. I'd prefer it without, but I'd buy it either way.

You won't have to replace springs in the Ruger very often. The other thing that bugged me when I used to have a .22 LR/.22 Mag. setup is that the bore diameter has to be compromised to shoot both which means that accuracy with the .22 Mag. cylinder installed will be noticeably better than with the .22 LR. My Ruger was a tackdriver with Mag. rounds but with .22 LR it wasn't that great. And the Mag. rounds are pretty expensive.

The 22 New Frontier Colt is a great gun . The feel, handling, and balance of the Colt is simply in a class by itself.

I have owned both and they both were accurate and dependable. The Colt however now is at least twice the value, and no better in quality compared to the Ruger. So buy based on your budget, and the fact the Colt will not be built again .

I've got both. I prefer the Colt but only because it's a Colt. I can't say one is better than the other. If the Ruger is an old model it's even closer.

Ruger wins on price. Colt on looks and "ohhhh" factor.

There is no doubt the New Model Ruger is more durable, and safer if you want to carry it fully loaded.

And Ruger parts are still being made in the unlikely event you ever need them.

The Colt uses flat springs, and the flat bolt spring is known to break on all Colt SAA's.
Ruger uses coil springs all around, and they simply never break.

As for which is better?

I feel the New Model Single-Six is a more durable & safer gun then any Colt Scout / New Frontier.

But I own a Colt Frontier Scout convertible and don't own a Ruger.

My New Modle Single Six convertable shools both long rifle and mags the same, and to the same point of aim. biker

I'd say both are about as nice as you're likely to find in their respective price class. This is kind of a Chevy vs. Cadillac thing though.

The fit and finish on the Colt will likely be of a much more luxurious than the Ruger.

Both FINE guns in their own right.

I just bought one of the Rugers at a gunshow last week, and I'm quite pleased with it.....but,DAMN,that Colt is mighty purty!!!!!

I have both. The Colt is great, but I don't care for the "safety block" in the loading gate. The Ruger is reasonable, accurate, and built for a lifetime (or two). I like the Ruger best.

rcmodel - I "knew" from the beginning of your post that Ruger was going to be the recommendation. Ya got me there amigo. - Thanks.

kbbaily - I am not familiar with a safety block in the loading gate. Could you please elaborate? - Thanks.

Yep - surely is "purty" Mil-Dot.

There is no hammer block safety on the Colt like there is on the Ruger. They put a safety block in the loading gate so that you MUST put the gun's hammer in the half-cock position, then open the loading gate, push the loading block safety (thus blocking the hammer from touching the firing pin) while you load the gun. The loading gate block is then automatically retracted when the hammer is brought to full-cock position.
It is not that I dislike the Colt....I just prefer the Ruger. The colt is a good gun. It has the traditional 4-click hammer....C*O*L*T....Mine belonged to my late friend who left this earth way too soon. I have already passed it to my oldest son.
Now I will stand by and be corrected about the loading gate....lol
