I have found a Ruger Single Six KNR-4 with both cylinders, NIB and unfired.
Appears to have all the paperwork.Still wrapped in paper in a red box.Serial number says it was built in 1976 and is a "Liberty" marked gun.
What is a fair price?

Hold the phone gents! The original KNR-4 is a rarity. Only around 300 produced "by accident" and in NIB condition, they go for as much as $1200. Snap it up if it's priced like any other regular Single Six!!! My guess is, it isn't. Hence the question.

Well, one is a rare collectible, the other a late model Lipsey's exclusive with zero collector value. Depends on whether you want to shelve it or shoot it. ;)

Good Guess

CraigC you are correct. Gun is an original KNR-4.My problem is that it belongs to the widow of a shooting friend.I helped sell her husband's gun collection (chasing away the vultures), and now she wants to give me the Ruger. I won't do that but I can't find what is a fair price. I can't get on the Ruger collectors forums because I use a gmail address.I want to buy this gun but I have to hold to the same standards as I made every other buyer of the collection. Can anybody out there help me?

Take it to a few reputable gun dealers. Ask them what they would be willing to give you for it. Figure the average, and pay that amount.

I might also suggest that if she wants to give it to you as a gift, let her do it.

I'll post a query on RugerForum on your behalf.

I would bet half the farm that NO "reputable gun dealer" will know what he's looking at, other than a stainless steel Single Six. This particular example is just too obscure for your average dealer to be aware of. Many would lowball at standard Single Six prices and then charge the full collector price.

You should be able to view content (but maybe not photos) on the Ruger forums without being a member. If not, Google "knr4 site:www.rugerforum.com" and you can certainly read the cached returns.

A response was posted yesterday on one of the Ruger forums about the value of KNR4 models:

The latest RENE price guide had the original KNR4 (non Liberty marked) came in at $615 NIB. Then the Liberty marked version (around 300 made, all with a 64- prefix) came in at $950 NIB.

RENE is the Red Eagle News Exchange, which publishes a quarterly Ruger collector & enthusiast's newsletter, a reference guide, and an annual collector's price guide.

No shipping sleeve. I'm planning on the gun becoming a safe queen for my widow to sell. I guarantee she will be better informed than the widow I helped. It took some effort to keep from shooting some of the slimeball "friends" who tried to buy what their "good buddy" "promised" they could when he "didn't need it anymore".
