Has anyone considered or used the concept of situational awareness in a more global or USa or Local way, to predict failures in infrastructure or other problems outside of the personal awareness?

Do you have a warning net? Contacts that you could trust to tell you if possible of immident danger such as a tornado or a local militia take over?

I have been working to strengthen this aspect of my Zeneophobic style of living. We don't watch TV only occassionally listen to radio, and have a tight knit group of freinds.

Things often come to us second hand or via the internet. How Much reliance on the net for news is Good? I never put much faith in the commentary and more on what I can see threw videos / pictures. I don't always trust thet either. Computers can fool people alot of times these days.

George: You may want to consider not using your full/real name on the internet. As a youngin, it clashes intensely with my innate skepticism.

Now, to your question, I think personally that a lot of news is just scaremongering, but no news is worse. You could probably keep aware on at least a local scale by having a lot of acquaintances -- I only know a few people I'd lay down my life for, but there are a bunch I'm willing to sit and pass the time of day with.

Also, if you're willing to do your own fact-checking, the internet is a pretty good place to find out what's going on, because everyone has a voice, there's no space constraint and perhaps less pressure to lean on a certain perspective.

Besides (and to keep this on topic), if you can't predict social unrest, then you really shouldn't put off buying that AK -- things could go south tomorrow!:D

Well years ago

back when the internet was a 300 baud modenand floppy drives, soem felt real world was better. For a short time I used different names such as Gunner, or ShadowMaaster but they just seem silly and I am in real life exactly what people see here and ready to defend that. I have people who would do me harm but they either choose not to or know better, either way for me I am George not of the jungle but George on the Homestead.

I have a few contacts, but and ever increasing my person band width. Zeneophobia is still nature to me though. I find contacts via telephone good. They usually don't want to come over when unrest happens either.

Zeneophobia is still nature to me though.

Is that anything like Xenophobia?

As for your reliance on any source of info, remember that 90% (on average) of everything is crap. That percentage is much higher on the Interweb. Of course, as a self-proclaimed xenophobe you'll find a lot you don't agree with, and quite a number of things you do--and no telling which, if either, is accurate.

One thing you should notice when you read at THR: Xenophobia is not the norm here--this group is as diverse as the spectrum of shooting. And that, Sir, is a very wide group.

I had a philosophy professor tell me that if we wanted to know what was going on in the world to not read the papers or watch TV. This was in 1992 - well before the internet was widely used.

There are internet news sources that can be trusted, but you have to look for them. In the meantime, gather news from a variety of sources and compare what they are saying to identify outlets with a tendency to slant the stories. You can drop those or take them a lot less seriously. Also, seek out news items that interest or affect you, don't just take what the news director chooses to lead with.

In my opinion, the web can be a lot more informative and less biased than newspapers and TV news. Plus, you can ignore the meaningless fluff about celebrities.

I have been intentionally recruiyed people into my realm of contacts just for information gathing intellegence. I don't make it openly appearent, but I don't hide it either.I ask hem to give me a call if they are getting a "feeling" or nervious about the area I have asked them about. no one has outright turned me down yet. Are there any other ways to know more about the government without actually being a part of it?

I check the news on the web every morning just to see if there are any new wars, major terror attacks, natural disasters, etc ...

Also, if I look up and see a big fireball whizzing across the sky, I can predict that earth is going to be hit by an asteroid/comet in the next 10 seconds :D

Mr. Hoppes,
Welcome. I mean no disrespect, but proofreading, and a run-through with a spell-checker would help your posts' clarity. You'll find a lot of good information here on the THR. Sentences like the following, however, make it difficult to be of help.

I have been intentionally recruiyed people into my realm of contacts just for information gathing intellegence.

Hmm.

This fellow seems rather popular, and the quote is apropos:
I read no newspaper now but Ritchie's, and in that chiefly the advertisements, for they contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.
Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Nathaniel Macon, 12 January, 1819
Obviously, one could broaden the application to other forms of media. Unfortunately, the statement about advertisements is hardly relevant in our day and age.

My human intelligence network largely consists of family, who are discerning enough to filter out a lot of the nonsense before it ever reaches my ears. Admittedly, I still rely too much on the liberal media and the loud voices of the discontent minorities that seek to sway us from our deepest convictions by the illusion of popularity. Translation: I watch the news, and I believe a lot of it.

ok
thank you all for your responses.

I have downloaded the spell checker and this post was spell checked.
Sorry for my spelling and crammer errors.

I've been detoxing off a Narcotic called fentynol ( Morphine derivative ) and while thoughts are clear sometimes I am typing while going through withdrawal. This will pass completely in the next few days. I will spell check from now on. I can see how reading some of my posts May have been difficult. Sorry I really didn't realize.

 Love that quote from Tom! As one of the first prominent Americans to extensively use published disinformation and political propaganda, Old Tom should have really known what he was talking about! (Look at the underhanded smear job he did on Meriwether Lewis after the Missouri tax revenues went missing!) :D

Mr. Hoppes, are you, by any chance, related to anyone at the company who makes my gun cleaning supplies? ;) You really need to be more careful. I Googled, 'Xeneophobia'; do you know that it took Google all of 2 seconds to find your post, here, on TFL - Just one misspelling!

Personally, I would never use my own name on the internet; heck, I wouldn't use the same, 'screen name' between websites either! (Too easy to track) I like to watch the news; it gives me some idea of what the monkeys are going to be up to next. I think you, also, need to get out more; and, 'Why' don't you own that rifle yet? Don't you know that Hillary is coming and we're all going to be dunked back into that pot of hot liberal stew all over again; and, this time, I wouldn't be surprised if we all go down for the third and last time! :uhoh:

I'm not xenophobic; I like people too much for that; and, besides, some strangers bring good news and hope along with them. As for those who don't, well ... just think of all the mundane boredom they're going to save you from! The time to get that new rifle you've always wanted and some more of those neat magazines is right now, my friend, right now!

No I am not related to Hoppe " ' " s Gun cleaning products family. My name is as it is spelled no relation. As for being careful I am armed with a mind for home protection and defense. I am Not going to change who I am for the INTERNET. I am me. it is possible to google my address and even get satellite images of my property and I am ok with that. If some one comes unannounced they are going to meet with resistance. Since I believe that day will ultimately come anyway I am prepared.

As for a rifle I am pacing my buying by a budget. First was the shot gun with which I can hit anywhere on my property and most of my neighbors. The list of to get guns is currently being worked on.

It amazes me how many people think a screen name keeps them "safe". IP addresses are recorded and names attached so to use a screen name really only gives the user a sense of security that doesn't exist. Most anyone with certain skills are capable of finding out Who you really are, so I choose not to Hide. Besides I am who I am, everywhere.

BTW a radio is on the short list too. The Yaesu FT-897 seems to be a logical choice for Us.

 You're telling me! Awhile back I got into an internet argument with a guy who suddenly showed up at my door! (How'd he do that?)

Still, why make it any easier for 'um than you absolutely have to? (Didn't think about a Google, 'fly over'; but, yeah, that could happen to!) We really do live out our lives in a, 'fish bowl' kind of display, now; don't we. Anyone with a cell phone could easily send pictures of whatever you're doing in real time to anyone, anywhere, in the world, too! ;)
