Ok, stupid question. I've recently acquired some new toys, and they need to be fed. 7.62x54 and 7.62x39. So, I've looked online, but there is a gun show coming to town tomorrow, and I want to go check it out, see if I can avoid paying shipping prices that raise the costs of the ammo by 50%.

How big are the bulk packages? 500 or 100 rounds of x39, and the 440/880 tins of x54? Specifically, what are the general dimensions and weight?

I'm trying to figure out if this is going to be a hand truck it back to the pickup truck kind of thing, or a carry it back to the motorcycle and strap it down kind of thing.

Take the truck. Trying to haul spam cans of 54R on a bike is a recipe for disaster. If you intend on getting a lot of ammo, bring a hand truck too, save your back! People will give you the stinkeye for having it in the aisle, but to heck with them - unless they're offering to help carry your purchases.

I have a collapsible hand truck I take to gun shows. I have seen other people at gun shows with them too. I'm getting too old to carry a lot of weight very far.

Well, I wasn't going to get too much ammo, maybe just 1000/880. And that sounds like I should be able to strap it on the bike ok, (big bike with a backrest behind the passenger seat and a trunk). That being said, it might be cutting it a little close, and if I decide to get anything else.....

1K rounds of rifle ammo should go in a trunk the size of a HD Tour Pak. It's a lot of weight, actually more than recommended. Just be sure it doesn't shift....My T bag has weighed as much as 80lbs when I travel. I hardly know it is on the back of my Road King.

I've carried way more than I should on this bike (k1200lt) it's mostly an issue to be of making sure it stays strapped properly if it isn't in the trunk or hard bags.

Can anyone give me an estimate of the weight of one of those boxes?

I've carried larger and heavier loads on my KLR650 - but then I do have a larger stronger self-made cargo rack. With expandable bag on the rack and two largish sidebags, I can make a cartload of groceries disappear from sight. Brings a smile to the face of the gal at Publix. :D
Just be careful of the higher CG with that weight.

Yeah, I took the truck, I think I could have gotten it back on the bike, but that wooden crate would have been uncomfortable trying to carry it back to the bike.

Too bad no one was selling any reloading presses though. Plenty of illegal oil can suppressor adapters, CA illegal batons, brass knuckles, and magnetic BB tools just waiting to turn someone into a felon though.
