So, when did Winchester 9mm go bulk?

I was at the farm store today, and they had Winchester ammo on sale. I've got a PF9 that I'm expecting back from Kel-Tec Service sooner or later, so I wanted to have various brands to test it out with.

At this store, the ammo is in a locked case. I chatted for a long time with the rather friendly older gentleman who was helping me, and he carried the ammo to the register (again, their policy). The girl rang me up, put it in a bag, and I tossed it out of sight behind the seat in my truck as I had a few more stops to make.

When I retrieved it, I discovered I now had a plastic bag containing 200 loose Winchester rounds, 2 empty boxes, and an intact, neatly packaged box of Remingtons.

I was slightly annoyed by this. :scrutiny:

I have been buying all my 9mm online for a few years (my CZech gun will eat anything, but especially likes S&B for some reason:D) and had no idea they had quite using the little styrofoam trays. The thing that most amazed me is that even 10% off, in the stupid bulk package, it still cost more than the Remington.

Anyway, just wanted to rant a bit, and find out how long WWB has been this way as I repack it into old trays & boxes.

You bought two boxes of 100 rounds each? The 50 round boxes are packaged in the trays, but the 100 round boxes are bulk packed. They've been like that for years.

The last Winchester 9 MM -- 100 rds bulk pack that I purchased was 5 or 6 years ago. Before that about 8 or 9 years ago.

BTW When I reload 9 MM I store them in plastic food containers with about 300 rds per container

Yes, I am referring to the 100 round packages.

Yes, I am probably several years behind the times.

I usually wind up with European or Mexican ammo since I can buy those in bulk for much less and have been more than satisfied with the quality. Apparently however the PF9 can be a picky eater and American produced ammo is recommended.

I was just surprised to find centerfire ammo just tossed loose in a box.

The WWB 9mm valuepacks have been like that for as long as I can remember, and I used to buy it by the case at walmart for about $120.

I think the 9mm 100 packs are loose in a box. The .40 and .45s are still in two foam trays inside one box.

Nope, the .45 acps are packed neatly without foam, but with a layer of cardboard between layers. Just saw a friend buy and use up two 100-round boxes day before yesterday.

Don't know anything about the .40s.

The WWB 100rd .45 boxes that I have been buying over the past seven years don't have foam. The rounds are laying flat in layers separated by a thin sheet of cardboard. I think it is 20 rds per layer.

The WWB 100-round .40 S&W boxes that I have all contain two 50-round foam trays, one on top of the other. The box says "100 round value pack" and has the "Made in USA" logo. I'm aware that loose bulk packaging has been used for WWB for years, but I've never seen any. :scrutiny:

I may be wrong but i remember hearing the loose rounds are made in china and the foam packed ones are made in the usa

Ran back down to the Armorer's Shop (basement) and established the following facts:

1) at one time the WWB 100 rd. .45 ACP came in foam trays. I have one. The price was marked $24.10 for whatever that is worth.
2) the loose 9mm I just bought is made in the USA. Right here in PRIL (maybe that's what you meant;)). No wonder it costs so much. I doubt Quinn & Madigan (by which I mean Rahm) will give Olin a tax break.

I'm also pretty certain Chinese ammo imports were verboten by our Dear Leaders. At least you never see the Norinco stuff anymore.

You were just victim of more anit-Wal-mart propaganda there. They're all made in the USA. Import of Chinese ammo was banned during the Clinton administration.

I must say though that I've not noticed US-manufactured ammo to be of any higher quality than any other stuff. Indeed, some of the worst handgun ammo I've seen as of late (the budget stuff Federal makes) has been US made.

I'd shoot RWS, Aguila, or Fiocchi way before Federal or WWB.

Huh. I would've sworn they used to come with two foam trays in one box. Shows what I know.

Perhaps you're thinking of the .380 ACP WWB? It still comes in two styrofoam trays holding 50 rounds each.

9mm 100rd boxes are what we lovingly refer to as 'WWB'. They're packaged loose, have been for at least 9 years when I started firearms.

Now other 100rd calibers come in styrofoam trays, and probably what you're thinking of.

I haven't bought a box of factory ammo in two years. Everything since then has been my cast reloads.

At one time I had 9 MM Winchester stamped made in Israel.
I have not purchased any 9 mm in a long time---all reloads.
So I have not seen any new boxes for a number of years.
