Given the man's love for all things .44....and his writings about his dislikes of the changes brought with the 44 Magnum Super Blackhawk...

Thinking Ol' Skeeter would be smilin' down with the rest of the Red Gods, from on~above whenever he spied one of these.

Like to think that Bill Jordan and Skeeter are having fun taking cheap shots at Elmer and there all arguing about it over some sippin' Whiskey and Poker...

Somehow, I think they'd all approve....

Someday, I would love to recreate the SS1 built for Skeeter in .44 Special. But that's another story for another day.

I like the idea of them all hanging out, like in the book Pale Horse Coming by Stephen Hunter. Of course, then you'd have Ed McGivern, Jack O'Connor and Audie Murphy to boot :)

What I want to know is, what would Charles Askins think? And can they have guns in Hell?
Doh, actually thats right, it was Charles Askins in "Pale Horse Coming" not Skeeter Skelton. Still it was a fun read :)
And of course there aren' t guns in hell, thats why its called hell :neener:

Man,

Wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall if those old boys got together with a few drinks and hands of cards....

Actually I did, on several occasions. But there weren't any cards, and there was some exchanging of views. They were all interesting gentlemen in their own way, even Col. Askins - who was by far the most experienced man killer present. The others had a more highly developed sense of humor. All of them loved guns and shooting.

Being younger (more or less) at the time I gave them the benefit of my extensive knowledge and experience... :D

Just happen to have the other one of the pair, along with a 1st issue "flat top" .44 with a 4 5/8" barrel.

Old Fuff,

Now those must have been interesting and entertaining times:)

What some of us would not give for a chance like that...I'd love to make up a Flattop into a 44 Special in the configuration of SS1. To that end, I already have the gun sitting in my safe...waiting;)

Well you should know that the Old Fuff is a very evil  person by now.

It has been brought to my attention that CDNN Sports (www.cdnnsports.com) have a small supply of the .357 and .44 Magnum flattop commemorative revolvers made by Ruger for substantially lowered prices.

.357 Magnum = $379.99
.44 Magnum = $389.99

Cased/Matched set of both = $799.00

Further, that 4 5/8 and 5 ½ inch barrels made for the regular New Model Blackhawks can be screwed into these frames.

The flattop .357 comes with a 4 5/8” barrel. Now if the barrel on the .44 was changed to match…. ;)

So what would have Skeeter done????

Old Fuff is ,,,,

Course his intent is to make us think the question through .... ;)

He threw out a very dicey question...

My guess is that Skeeter wouldn't bother with a New Model with the safety improvements. He was of the exact opposite opinion of Elmer Keith. While Elmer sang it's praises, Skeeter could not bring himself to willingly except the improvement ~ or lack thereof....

So, Skeeter would have found an Old Model or a Flattop and converted it to .44 Special ~~~~still:)

Skeeter did love the .44 Special (as do I) but when he tried to convert .357 flattops to .44 he discovered that the cylinder walls were too thin at the point where the bolt cuts were made, and the .44 Magnum was a bit too large for what he had in mind.

The new .357 flattop has a cylinder that is the same diameter as the .44, but is shorter in length - or so I'm told. If so, a .357 cylinder could be rechambered to .44 Special, and the barrel replaced with one intended for a .44 Magnum The cylinder could also be line bored for maximum accuracy.

Or on the other hand a .44 Magnum could simply have the barrel cut or replaced with a shorter one (as Skeeter and I both liked).

I don't particularly like transfer bar safties on single action revolvers, but the current flattops have been improved to the point where I think I can make one acceptable.

As for the lock.... What lock! I don't see a lock.

you're kidding, right??

I paid $500 for my .357, and would again. It's the most beautiful sixgun that Ruger has made, IMHO. At $379 I almost need a second to match. Too bad there are other things higher on the list. :-(

You can phone them and confirm the price and availability at (800) 588-9500.

I don't think they have (or maybe had) many, and they may be gone. But I agree with your opinion of the revolver and if they are still available it's a flaming deal. I kick myself for not posting this information sooner. :(
