HI, I bought an all number matching Russian SKS, I had a hard time getting it sighted in, and another shooter helped me get it done. He told me that there is a sight called tech sight I checked their website and it looks like you have to remove the takedown latch is this true. If so, can you buy another latch if I do not like tech sight? Are there better options for aftermarket sights for SKS?

Yes you need to remove the latch. You remove the pin to remove the latch. You can put the latch back and install another pin. Latch is available but not the pin. You can use a pin made from a nail.

In terms of re-sighting an SKS without altering it, ScoutScopes.com in Leander, Texas has great mounts (just be advised that pretty much only a holo sight [i.e. 'red dot'] will fit without blocking the old-school top-loaders).

Thanks Col Plink for info on scout scope from photos in their site the mount goes into slot where rear sight goes?

Yes, the Scout mount replaces the rear sight leaf. I have one of those and a set of Tech-Sights, and they are both very nice. Personally, I prefer the tech-sights, but that's mostly because I don't like red dots very much.

I like mine open sighted. I actually thought it was a unsaid rule to just get it to hit the broad side of a barn and then just go like hell. Lol. Ill be the first to say, I can hit a soda can at 200yrds with my open sights, with one of my 30 rounds anyway. Maybe I didn't hit it and just scared it over? But is the fear factor worth something in can slaughtering?

You can hit a soda can at 200yds with open sights? I'm pretty sure I can't even SEE a soda can at 200yds. You must have great vision.

i can hit a soda can with a SKS at 200 yards. And i´m not even throwing it with my strong arm!

Why, go to surplusrifle forum,
here is the guys link http://www.kivaari.com/

get a better trigger, don't mess with the mags, aftermarkets don't work anyways, why put a plastic stock on (unless you want to keep the original)

And realize that once you start modifying the rifle, you will run into compliance issue, to keep it legal you must have less than 10 foreign parts on it.

I'd say my Yugo M59 is a 2 MOA rifle; I've hit 2qt juice jugs from 100yds reliably when I do my part (original sights). I've decided to kepp them that way...

OH, and stay the hell away from a dust cover scope mount, the will never be accurate, think about it, the dust cover moves every time the bolt cycles...

Are there better options for aftermarket sights for SKS?

I have had tech-sights on my norinco SKS for ~ two years now. For $45, they are a great upgrade. Yes, if you remove your dust cover there is a chance your sights will not be zeroed when re-installed. I have only removed my dust cover 2-3 times (for major scrubbing) and each time my tech sight was fine.

The Tech-Sights are nice, order a set for your 10/22 or Marlin 60/795 while you're at it.

I had to do some serious work getting that assembly pin's retention nub off, but I tried it out without the nub and it worked, you could just lose it easily. I think some epoxy would replace the retention pin just fine if I wanted to ditch the rear aperture, but I don't know why I would ever dump the rear aperture.

In my opinion (which is only worth half of what you paid for it) an SKS has no need for a scope or optic ... it is a budget battle rifle, not sniper gun from a video game.
Of course, I don't like scopes in general, although holosights/red dots are OK they would just look silly on an SKS.

Thanks for replys what I ment for aftermarket items were for the sights and optics. If I go with either the tech sight or scout scope will either of these permanently modify the rifle?

techsights DO require permanent modifications (i.e. grinding off a part to take the dust cover pin out)

The SKS tech sights are a great upgrade - not just upgrading to peeps, but increasing sight radius as well. I don't think there is a better aftermarket iron out there for the SKS, with mine I can drill 10" steel plates at 150 yards almost every shot.

Mine needed two files, a lot of four-letter-words, help from MrsBFD, a vise, and a pair of vise grips.

But after all that, the pin still worked, as far as I can tell the cross-pin's retaining pin is just to keep you from losing the thing during stripping.

I tossed it into a labeled paper envelope and stashed it in the same box as other small parts taken off of firearms, but I can't imagine why I would remove the tech-sight setup, it works superbly.
