Ok, I'm sure this has been bashed to death, but I want to be sure I am going to be legal when all is said and done. http://www.sksman.com/part/parts3.php sells a kit with all parts necessary to make the game legal. From what I understand, the SKS has 18 imported parts. Now the game requires you to have 10 or less imported parts. The list from sksman is a total of 8 parts that get replaced, leaving me with 10 imported parts. That makes it legal, right? Now somewhere I could swear I read that if the bayonet is going to be removed, the GL had to be replaced with a muzzle brake. Is that right? Or was it if the bayonet is staying, the GL had to be replaced? Or does the GL have to be replaced regardless? Either way, I am ditching the bayonet to shave off the extra weight. Making this a hunting rifle, can ya tell?

Just as I think I'm starting to understand this game, I think of more things to make it more confusing. I have posted this same thought to other boards, but apparently everyone decided to quit reading the boards there for the last 2 days. Hope you can help.

The SKS is made out of the following parts.

1. Receiver
2. Barrel
3. Bolt
4. Bolt carrier
5. Operating rod (gas piston extension)
6. Gas piston
7. Trigger housing
8. Trigger
9. Hammer
10. Sear
11. Disconnector, bolt follower
12. Disconnector, trigger mount arm]
13. Stock
14. Handguard
15. Magazine body
16. Follower
17. Floorplate

The Yugo has the extra one for the grenade launcher.

The key is to replace enough parts to have 10 or less original foreign parts to make it US legal. The Tapco kit does this for you. If going to change all this stuff I would remove the grenade launcher and use the threaded barrel to attach whatever you wanted to it, typically a flash hider.

The loophole seems to be written in to keep US after market parts sellable while keeping foreign parts out and helping domestic firearms companies out, especially when back then china accounted for a 1/3 of all firearms sales in the US. Its a little annoying but you'll get the hold of it.

The grenade launcher is counted as a foreign part and adds to the count so its best to remove it if you are going the modified SKS route so it doesn't add to your count and you can always stick on a US made flash hider.

The bayonet and lug are not listed as a part of the rifle and so don't count, however they are classed as a feature to determine if its a semi automatic assault rifle under the 1989 ban. This is why the Chinese SKS from 1989 to 1993 aren't allowed one on the rifle and be legal to be imported into the US.

And yes theres all sorts of rules you have to follow on imported firearms with part counts when you modify them. The Yugo SKS and late imported Russians etc are only in the country as a Curio and Relic and that bans modifications to the standard stock form.

All this only appplies if you want to add a detachable mag or PG style stock.

If you just want a better stock, like a Monte Carlo style, you are ok.

Cali legal?

Ok, so if i take the bayonet off my 1952 russian and leave everything else as original i should be fine, right??

The addition of a FIXED 20 rd mag on an otherwise factory Chinese SKS is legal? I keep getting mixed answers on this.

If I recall, the wording is :detachable, hi-capacity magazine

I am sure you can do a search on 922R and find it.

Not familiar with Cali laws, are bayo's on C&R firearms a no-no?

My understanding is that the bayo is what designates the gun as C&R. Removing this then makes it no longer C&R, which means it's been modified, which then means the 10-part game is in effect. I think? I hate legal-ese.
