I am going to take a Norinko SKS and put it into a bullpup stock. I am also planning on cutting, crowning, threading, and adding a comp or brake. I would like to hear from anyone that has ever done this. I am particularly interested in knowledge of barrel lenght that worked (cycled with off the shelf ammo) and those that did not (would not cycle, as in not enough gas).

To be ATF legal, rifle barrel length has to be 16" or greater.

And OAL length has to be 26" or greater.

Those are the measurements you need to worry about.

If you cut the barrel shorter the 16", the comp or brake has to be blind pinned or welded on so it can't be removed.

I am familiar with those requirements. My worry is that if I remove a portion of the barrel, say down to 16.5", I will be removing more than half of the barrel beyond the gas block. This will cut the "dwell time" (if thats the right word) that the round is in the barrel and beyond the gas block. I am worried that could make the rifle fail to cycle properly by not provinding gas pressure to the piston for a long enough time. This was the issue when they first tried to make dissapator M16s. But that DI and this is piston...

"Paratrooper" SKS's came from the factory with 16" barrels and are as reliable as the 20" models

In other words, the paratroopers have bigger gas holes.

I don't know that about an SKS. Only the AR-15/M-4 series. That's the reason for the suggestion to go to the SKS specific forums for an answer.

So I have been researching the internet from one end to the other. Here is what I have found and what I believe to be true. 1. I am going to cut the barrel to 17 inches. From what I have read this should work, should. If not there are things that can be done with the gas port and the recoil spring, but I think it can be done. 2. 17 inches allows me to get an appropriate length that will meet federal regulations, and.. that can have the threaded portion cut off to 16.5 to meet MA regulations (residence of my family). 3. a couple of respected gunsmiths in my area declined to take on the barrel cut because of the barrels chrome lining. No worries, their reputation is tied to their work. So I am going to do it myself. I have done shotguns before, but not a rifle. I have read up on it and I am prepared. I will assume the risk of the chrome flaking. And of course, I will throw up some pictures of the project along the way.

Thank you Jimmyray for the testimonial. That gives me more confidence.

here are a couple of pics. Not a bad job for the first barrel I have ever cut and crowned by hand

Mine in the a sgworks bull pup stock. Cut it down to right around 17" and recrowned it. Shoots and functions just fine with everything I've run through it.

The crown was very hard to get a picture of. I finished it with 2000 grit wet/dry and 0000 steel wool, so the glare was throwing the auto focus off.

wabashman- that is the same stock I ordered. Did you color it and how, or did it come that way? and how long did it take to arrive?

maybe a little better picture?

I used duracoat on it. Magpul FDE. As for how long it took to receive the stock, I honestly don't recall. I've had it for probably two years now.

thanks for the info. I think I am going to keep mine black. Did you, or anyone else, grind down the bolt so that the magazine could be removed while the bolt was forward? I did mine today. Everything appears to have gone right, but I wont know for sure till I get it all together and test it out.

I didn't grind the bolt down. Didn't even know this was an optional thing to do really.

If I shot it more I would have to do that but I probably shoot it five times a year. Just don't have the time to shoot and I have a range off my front porch even.

Interesting, have a link to the info on how to do it?

This guy is an amateur, but his videos are pretty well done. He also has videos on crowning a barrel.

One thing that I did different than he did was started with a angle grinder like he did to remove the bulk, being VERY careful of courese. Then I stepped down to a dremmel to finish the grind. Finished with 800 and 2000 wet dry sandpaper.

I finished the rifle a few months back but only recently got out to test fire it. It runs like a champ. That is a fairly cheap sight on there, but it shoots amazingly accurate.
