AIM Surplus is advertising Yugoslavian SKS rifles in excellent condition. My question is: 'Are they all coated in cosmoline?'

All you need is a can of Gun Scrubber. Works wonders taking the cosmoline off.

Yes. I haven't seen a Yugo that wasn't bathed in the stuff.

There's a number of techniques for taking it off, including hot water, garment steamers, various chemicals and degreasers, dishwashers, and much, much more. If I were to get another, I would get a $30 steamer from Wal-Mart. Cosmo has a low melting point, so heat is your friend.

OK, thanks.

Just wondering, since a guy further down in this forum bought an Ishapore and said it was just coated in oil. I thought maybe we'd be lucky and find an SKS that was just oiled.

Take it apart and run it through your dishwasher. I read about that technique a while back. The article included pictures and it seemed to do a very good job. Google for it.

Yugo SKS have some of the heaviest coatings of cosmoline I've seen. However, that's also kept them in very good shape.

Mineral Spirits and a toothbrush will clean up the cosmoline.

Who was it that had an ad a while back, saying that every rifle came with a free pound of Cosmoline?
AIM, SOG? I forget, but it was pretty funny.

Even if you were to get lucky and it isn't covered in cosmoline, you should still take everything apart and clean it. I wouldn't trust a stranger to get ALL of the cosmo out of a yugo, especially with the firing pin. Besides, this will ensure that you at least accomplish a visual inspection of all the parts.

I remember reading that someone bought a Yugo at a gunstore and they were missing the gas piston. (My memory is a little cloudy, so would those that know please correct me.)

I found Break Free Powder Blast to disolve cosmoline much better than gun scrubber or brake cleaner. Much nicer smelling too. After wiping everything I could reach down with a paper towel it took less than half a can to get all the nooks and crannies cleaned of cosmo on my 59/66.
