SKS Cowboy Campanion

Has anyone heard of a SKS model called the Cowboy Campanion. My dealer had one today. It is a Chinese SKS with a shortened barrel. I think the barrel was 16.5 inches. He is asking around $200 for it.

Cowboy's Companion:
This is a very well known commercial variant. It has a shorter 16.5" paratrooper style barrel, scope rail, standard 10 round magazine, and It's my opinion that the Companion has no bayonet lug. Poyer's book says yes, there is a lug and a bayonet, Long's says no there isn't. I have never seen one with a bayonet, so who's right? Maybe it's a mixed bag, who knows with the Chinese. It would make sense if there was not a lug because if these were really made with the rancher vs. varmints in mind, a bayonet lug would get constantly caught up in a saddle rifle holster.

That's a good price, you'd better grab it if it's in nice shape. The Cowboy Companion is basically the same things as the Chinese Paratrooper which you may have heard off. Nothing more than a shortened standard SKS. The only difference between a Para and a Cowboy Companion is that the Cowboy Companion has a small scope mount riveted to the side of the receiver. Also I think most of the CC's have the bayonets removed, while some of the Para's retain the bayonet. Below is a picture of my Cowboy Companion. As mentioned the CC (as was the Para) were shortened by the importer. These were not produced for the military in shortened form. I believe that my CC was originally a standard military carbine that was later refurbed and cut down for the civilian market. Therefore they are considered commercial variants. According to my SKS book the CC was marketed toward ranchers who might be in need of a short handy rifle.

Good call!!! I used to sell these new and they were VERY popular. Just a nice handling little carbine. Wish I still had one! He didn't have another one for your new best friend did he? Buddy? Pal?

My first SKS was a Cowboy's Companion (no bayonet and the bayo lug is ground off; the cleaning rod is retained by a small screw!). I still have it, and wish I could locate (for a reasonable price) one of the mounts designed to fit that little side rail that was previously mentioned.

Not my last SKS, though . . .

Yes- and they predate American cowboys by hundreds of years.

I had one of those little cuties, sold it tho. It used to doubletap occasionally, was a prob with gas piston not being modified to go with short barrel. Put a rubber o-ring on end of piston to get more pressure on piston and cured it.

They are fun.

I am picking it up Saturday. I will see if he has any more. I think he mentioned that he sold this one a few years ago and now it is back. Previous owner needed to sell it for some quick cash. The ironic thing is that I was there to ship one of my guns that I just sold. I even brought the wife so I wouldn't buy anything. She told me to buy it any way. So much for her being the voice of reason.

Definete good buy there. I paid more than that (and more than I care to admitt for an SKS) to get a Paratrooper. At least where I am from, they are very rare so I had to jump on it.
