Hello, I was doing some research on the SKS, I have been thinking one or two, one day. I have read that the after-market detachable magazines don't work in these rifles. Is that true? If so, is there any way to get them to work?

Thank you

Larry:)

I have a fair amount of experience with them. I have several detachable mags... When loaded to max capacity, they jam like crazy. But if I only load half to 3/4 full, they usually function reasonably well.

For example, I usually put 12 to 14 in the 20 round mag, and 20 to 30 in the 40 round mag.

In a "life-or-death" self defense situation, the original 10 round fixed mag is the only one I'd trust. Its always reliable. However, I use my SKS alot for informal plinking, so the higher capacity mags are fun to use.

I have never seen an aftermarket mag that HAS functioned reliably. However, none of the people I know have tried Grant's trick of 3/4 full loading; at least, not that I know of.

Of all the shooters I know with SKSes... which is most... every one has gone back to the stock 10-rounder in the end.

However, of all the detachable mags out there, the 20-round Tapco has the best reputation. I recently read that USA Mags has a good one also, but are no longer manufactured.
