I bought, from a gun store ,a few years a go. A Ban-style Norinco SKS. W/the bayonet lug grounded off .It was set in a "Dragonov" style stock w/ pistol grip. It is all original parts as far as the actual firearm goes. No detachable mag. Is it legal?

Don't know why it wouldn't be, unless you happen to live in one of the more Commie states. The assualt weapon ban was allowed to expire.

I have read that because it was imported for sporting purposes that it would make it an "assault weapon" and you would have to make it complaint like an AK. I know you can't put 30rd detachable mags on a Norinco. Just like you can't put a detachable 30rd mag on a Yugo SKS it voids it's C&R status. I am just trying to make sure I'm legal and if not I am going to change the stock to an original and go show my butt at the store that sold it to me. I am just trying to be responsible.

Not a lawyer, but I thought that 922 still applies whether the import ban has expired or not. I think that the compliance parts legislation is separate from the AWB, and has not expired.

Like I said though, not a lawyer. I'd sure have a lot more cool toys if I was.

I believe it needs 922 parts after that you are fine you can even have 30 round mags and folding stocks if your state allows it. With out 922 parts your SKS needs to be in a importable configuration.

Sounds like it is fine. Thumbhole style stocks aren't viewed by the law in the same manner as the separate pistol grip and shoulder stock. Without a detachable magazine or bayonet lug, it would be considered "sporting." The Norinco models didn't rely on C&R status to be legally imported like the Yugo 59/66.
