Hi folks,

I saw these TechSights and loved them when I tried them a friend's rifle (not an SKS). However, it looks like they will immediately negate one of the advantages of the SKS/AK platform - cleaning from the receiver side. Am I missing something here or these indeed don't allow this much-preferred way of cleaning?

Are there good SKS sights that don't have this problem?

Thanks,

JP

I have Tech sights on my Yugo SKS and I LOVE them! And no, they don't change anything about the cleaning. When the sights are installed, there are two allen-head set screws that are tightened against the rear of the receiver. Then the sight itself is held in place by a large slotted screw that replaces the top cover retainer, engages a nut on the left side of the receiver. The sight can be taken off in a matter of seconds, the rifle cleaned, and the sight re-installed without compromising the sight settings.
Here's a picture of mine along with a 100 yd. group fired with ordinary ol' Barnaul FMJ ammo.

Good luck.

Looks like it is held on with the receiver cover pin. Won't change cleaning from the chamber end but may not return to zero with removal as they claim. I think Williams makes a peep that replaces the factory rear sight. Not as close to your eye but no need to remove.

I was a little slow... or fast.
I may have to try one if they do returnto zero.

Thanks guys

Jim147, your target looks convincing enough - if it keeps zero, it's good enough. Are the sights steel- or aluminum-based?

35Whelen, I'll take a look at Williams' too, thanks for the tip

Man, if only they made SKSs in 7.62x51, this would be a nearly-perfect rifle!

Again, the position of the sight base is held in place by two set crews that enter from the rear and bear against the rear of the receiver. These screws have blue Loctite on them from the factory and will not move once set. So, when the sight is replaced, it returns to its original position every single time. If it didn't, I would've thrown the sight away long ago.

OR you could buy a good cleaning rod clean from the muzzle and not obsess about removing the receiver cover, it's not like there's anything that gets dirty back there anyhow.

I had the Williams FireSight set on my Yugo. To be honest, it was so far away I'd call it more of a ghost ring. It was alright, an improvement over stock but the TechSights would be a LOT better IMO.

I can't wait for them to make one for my AK (that doesn't cost a fortune).

I just replaced the front sight post only with the $5 one from Techsight, thats all I needed to improve the sight picture 1/2" five shot groups at 50 Yds. I don't think I need to change anything else.

+1

I've got a TAPCO'd out Paratrooper and the single best mod I've done to it is the tech sights. No need to remove in normal cleaning, just invest in a boresnake and wipe down the bolt face.
