So today I purchased a Chinese SKS. I'm quite pleased with it. Looks nice, came with the cleaning rod, chest rig to hold stripper clips, and of course a bayonet rifle spike. The bayonet was not attached however.

Doing a quick google search, in the brief descriptions that came up with the websites I saw several times about not attaching the spike bayonet because it can cause you some problems.

Is there anything I should know about this spike bayonet before I install it?

I should get to shoot it tomorrow, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks!

You should be ok, I have a chinese SKS and they are one of the tougher built SKS rifles out there. One of the only ones to come with a chrome lined barrel
How much did you pick it up for?

1) I hate search functions. They never turn up the results I want, and I have to wade through so much stuff. That's why I just prefer to ask directly those who know. :)

2) It was $260. They had another Norinco SKS that didn't come with anything for $210 i believe, and then a Yugo SKS for $250.

There is the 89 Import ban. I am no expert on it but I think you either have to have proof it was imported before 1989 or go to Tapco a play the parts game like you would if you wanted to have have all the goody features on your AK.

the russians (except maybe the wartime prototypes), romanians, albanians, and chinese all used chrome lined barrels on the SKS

I did not know that, thanks.

Yep, Yugos are conversely some of the only ones that do not have chrome lined barrels.

I picked up a Norinco SKS not like ago, except mine was the short version without the bayonet at all. I really enjoy mine. I replaced the stock with a Tapco stock and got some 20 round mags for it. Works like a champ - very fun gun to shoot.

Heh.

Well at the moment, I think I'm going to leave the spike off. I haven't found a satisfactory answer to that question. Or maybe I have, but since I can't prove when my gun was imported, it doesn't seem to matter.

Guess if I really want a bayonet on an SKS, it gives me reason to buy a Yugo. :)

I have the pre ban chicom sks, They tested those rifle's with the spike extented before issue, I have fired mine with the bayonet fix and I have a Russian pre ban sks with a fixed Chicom 20rd mag, They are great and ole 66912 has that Cowboy compainion, Sks Paratrooper that takes 30rd detable 30rd mags, Those Waffle bulgar mags work like a champ in that thing They seat almost as easy as a 16

I'd much rather put the bayonet on, but like I said im not sure if its preban. If I use the "adding first 1 or 2 numbers" I get a production date of 81. All the numbers match on the receiver, stock, receiver cover, and everywhere else I can find a number.

So I went to the range this evening, and fired 40 rounds of that Romanian Hot Shot ammo. No problems whatsoever with the ammo.

I decided to start at 25 yds, sitting supported to see what kind of accuracy it was. Well, at 25 yds I was shooting high. Couldn't hit to save my life.

So I brought it in to 15 yds(my friend had a pistol so that range was more comfortable for her), and because of where the target was set on the stand tried shooting standing unsupported. Was definitely hitting paper and had a pretty good grouping. Nothing in the 1-2 range, but it wasn't anything bigger than 5, which I think is pretty good for my first time. Hopefully I can figure out what I was doing and shoot at the longer ranges.

But I'm definitely happy with my purchase. :)

because of 922R ya cannot have the bayo actually mounted, we had to remove all of them on rifles we imported after 1989... the BATF knows exactly when any imported rifle was imported as all they need do is audit the importers books (a single phone call to the importer, takes em 2 minutes they give the importer the serial number and he tells em the date of importation thats why ya legally cannot remove the importer info off of imported guns either if they were imported after 1964 that info is viewed just like the serial number so they can easily track any imported gun) as the rifle was logged when it came into the country. the production date has nothing at all to do with it period, its strictly based on when it was released from the customs warehouse into the importers possession the importer then had 15 days to get it logged into his bound books, if it did not already have the bayo attached (originally the srew threads were peened over after the bayo was installed) and ya do not have an original bill of sale then ya are better off leaving the bayo off unless ya turn the rifle into an American made SKS by swapping out the required 922R parts....... realistically the only way ya will ever get busted is if ya commit another crime and they add in the 922R violation just to add to the stack of charges...... BATF does not go around door to door asking to inspect your SKS.......

Good choice:
Mine was sold with no bayonet, but the lighter weight, shorter length (no bayo or grenade launcher) and better c.g. makes it handier than the Yugo I tested.
If I somehow were to buy another (2nd) SKS one day instead of a Saiga rifle, it would be the so-called "Paratrooper".
The prices plus the chrome-lined barrels persuaded me.

But already have a really fun Mini 30 in the same caliber (and 14).

Try SARCO and some of the other C&R dealers.

Bayonet has same range as 7.62x39R round. Sorry, couldn't resist.

My dad has the SKS Norinco version. It had everything with it for 100$ some years ago. You should also have the front sight adjustment tool.

I got him some Wolf Ammo 123gr JHP, 500cnt for 99$.

Brother bought him the banana magazines. But I think the stripper clips are better setup.

Gunrange frequenter had his trigger cleaned up with new springs and polishing. Shoots really nice.

Front Sight Adjustment

While at the range I needed to make some sight adjustments, so I pulled out the handy dandy Tapco sight tool. I had no problems adjusting for elevation, but couldn't for windage. All the tool would do is screw down on it and become really tight. I'm guessing it shouldn't be that hard to adjust for windage. So I'm thinking its stuck. Any thoughts on how to loosen it up some?

That tool sucks, I tried to use it on an AK build, it just bent and buggered up the front site base, I ended up centering the windage by using a laser bore sight, a 5inch vise, some sockets, and a small bolt to drift the sight to one side.

Also soak the front site in some PB blaser or Seafoam deapcreep, I used the sea foam stuff to get the barrel pin out of the AK build, it worked great.

My only complaints about the bayonet is that it adds useless weight and the vibration from it effects groups. It's not like the SKS is a target gun anyway, but the ones I own tend to shoot a little tighter with the bayonet removed. Just my $.02.
