SKS: red dot or TechSight

I've never tried a red dot, but mounting optics on an SKS is problematic. Receiver cover mounts and gas tube mounts are said to lose zero easily. I'll leave it to someone who's tried it to address that.

I have a Tech-SIGHTS TS200 on one of mine, and the improvement surprised me. And I discovered to my delight that it seems to hold zero even though you do need to remove it to strip the rifle.

The Tech-sight is hands down the best after market sight you can get for an SKS and a big advantage. Then all that is required is properly bedding the rifle and you be set.

A red dot works superbly, if you use one of the rear sight mounts, the rear cover mount is usually next to useless although some people have made them work ok.

That's my Yugo with one mounted, and comb adjusting pad to get a proper cheek weld. I find it much easier to use in low light and when shooting game, than irons. But I'm old and have bad eyes. That red dot is incredibly quick to pick up, and accuracy is much improved over the standard sights.

I've tried scopes. They interfere with stripper clips and the reciever mounts are just awkward. I've tried red-dots, but there's no good mount. The one's that go on the rear sight block are way too high. Height over bore is like 3 inches. I have one of those Millet mounts in a box somewhere.

Tech-sights are the way to go. If you're looking for quick sight acquisition over precision accuracy, try a Williams Firesight front sight combined with a Tech Sights TS-200 rear sight (so you get elevation and windage adjustments at the rear sight). On a sunny day, it's the next best thing to a red-dot. I have that combo on my SKS-M and love it.
