I'm interested in a Norinco SKS with 30 rd mag listed locally $400 by the photos looks to be good shape . I not very familiar with SKS other than You Tube videos also the metal and plastic magazines have negative reviews. I have seen other SKS models at the LGS and pawn shops don't know if any still available.

I would say that you should make sure if you buy one, that it comes with the original 10 round magazine and associated pieces. That is way better than the 30 round duckbill mags. Unless it is the sks-m model that takes ak mags.

Just my $.02

$400's fair market value for an SKS, but like @LNK said, I consider the aftermarket 30 rounders to be a net negative. Just looked them up for kicks and the original factory fixed magazines are expensive too. Guess you only need one... anyway, it'd be helpful

The price and the relative rarity of the SKS-Ms vs the plain Jane Norincos makes me think this gun's not the former, but it'd be a steal for $400 if it is. The -Ms have a shorter barrel and look kind of stubby.

The Russian SKSs are the best, but the Norincos are right up there too. I kick myself everytime I think back and remember seeing cases of them for sale 300 bucks. Back then, a single Norinco SKS was 60 bucks.
Man, If I could go back....

But far as mags go, like others have said, best to just keep the OEM 10 magazine. If you can find them, USA magazines made an all steel duck bill mags that fit perfect and worked like clockwork, but I sold mine with my Norinco (a mistake I regret to this day, just like selling my SKS-M at the same time).

I have not seen them for sale anywhere outside used on Gunbroker for years.

Armslist photo will only download into text. rifle has longer barrel. LGS usually had a few SKS rifles don't know how it is now - thanks for the info everyone

Bought mine from classic. $400 shipping to NY included.

really gee i think i paid something like 70 for mine . it was a long time ago . have not shot the thing in years

Ditch the 30 rounder and either go with the original 10 rounder, or if you can find one for sale, the PLA 20 rounder. I had one on my Norinco, worked as flawlessly as the 10 rounder.

I've only seen a small handful of sks rifles work with the 30 round magazines.
Usually: bang, bang, click, #$%&, bang, bang, bang, &%#&, click, &@#$, bang.....

I've purchased 2 extra 10 round magazines for when I go shooting and someone brings an "sk" (I can't roll my eyes hard enough) or an sks. Alrighty I already know whats gonna happen.

90% of the time they whip out an sks with an extended appendage....
They get pissed that it don't work. I pop in the fixed mag. They are happy until I take my mag back. Then I tell them what they need to find and buy.

I detest to the bottom pits of hell the duckbill 30s.
Physics based reality only permits me to share a small percentage of my loathing for those dammnable devices.

I've got a Norinco SKS that I use a Tapco 20 round duckbill mag in and it works flawlessly. Still have the matching # original 10 rounder also.
I have a few of those and they feed ok, but dont lock the bolt open on the last round- which makes it pretty difficult to reload or even remove said magazine when the bolt must be locked open to do so........

I stick to the 10 round factory fixed mags now. Stripper clips are plenty fast enough anyway.

I have a commercial Norinco SKS bought unissued back in the early '90s.

When I got it, I promptly bought a 5 round mag and a 20 triangle shaped chi-com magazine. I had to fit the 5 rounder to the gun using a file. The 20 rounder wouldn't work for squat, so I sent it back (mail order) and replaced it with a 30 round USA mag that I still have to this day.

That USA mag had to be fit to the gun with a file as well, and I had to tune the feed lips. That mag feeds great, but won't load to a full 30. About 28 is about all I can stuff into it and expect the bolt to strip off the first cartridge.

Still, that bulky 30 round magazine is a pain to use, even though I modded it to be removed from the gun while the gun is assembled.

So, my Norinco has its 10 rounder mounted from here on out. The 5 rounder was used a couple times for hunting only, and is a crooked little painted job not made nearly as nice as the 10 rounder.

The PLA 20 rounder I had lock open after the last round, and worked flawlessly. I picked up mine at a gun show about 12 years ago for $5; last one I saw at a gun show two years ago was $50.

I’d run the Tapco 20 rounders. They are built pretty good now. If you have problems, find someone (like me), who can identify the hangup issue and correct it. The newer Tapco 20s don’t have the follower sticking issues of the cheep steel mags. Nor do they have the loading issues of the 30rd polymer mags like the ProMags often do. Although I can get those to run as well. But the Tapco 20’s sometimes function well without touching anything. And even if they do give a malfunction or two, fixing the issue is usually quite easy.

Did you have to mod the receiver?
Inserting it initially was a tight fit, I sanded the wood inside the mag well to open it up a little, but did not touch any metal in the mag well or receiver.

There are various videos to show how to modify the bolt so you can insert and remove the Tapco mag without having to have the bolt open, but I did not do that.

Bingo! It’s actually quite easy to make
them run flawless. Without modifying the bolt. Just need to know how to read the failure.

These are parts. They aren’t intelligent. They don’t have a thought process. A magazine will cause a failure for a reason. It’s not “spontaneous”, LOL.
