My SKS is rusting. I've tried to keep oil on it, Weapon Shield, and I've been looking at Eez-Ox. The problem is that its already started. I've got a little physical rust on the magazine and a few small spots on the reciever. My issue is with the fine layer of surface rust on the barrel, front sight, and basicly every nook and cranny I can't get steel wool into. Even worse is the fact this thing is impossible to remove pins from and the bayonette screw (and most others) is punched to prevent removal ($99 surplus from two years ago, not sure what importer).

Short of localized heating with a torch to get the pins out, there's no way I can get this thing apart to get all the rust. I've been thinking of taking it to a smith for a bath and complete rebluing, since I can't seem to stop the rust and a few spots I've used rust remover on, while not rusting again, the bluing that I applied didn't take well.

Any idea about what this kind of tank-rebluing operation costs and any ideas on whether I should continue to try to stop it myself?

The problem with rust on a firearm is that once it starts, it's almost impossible to stop or to keep from spreading. If it's on a surface that you can get to easily, you can polish/work it off but if it's in the little tiny nooks and crannies, you can never get it all off with a major refinish job. What,s even worse is the areas that you can't see and an SKS has a lot of those. If you like the rifle and plan on keeping it, a complete re-finish job is worthwhile. However, be prepared: A complete professional refinish job will cost more than what you originally paid for the rifle! Keep yer powder dry, Mac.
