Getting back to your question, get the saiga 5.45 and just buy lots of ammo. I love sks rifles but really, get the saiga and five mags or so. These clowns want 3 bills for a real(non yugo grenade) old used gun and the saiga is only 1 or so more. If sks are so wonderful, why are they not being pumped out as a new product for u.s. consumption? And don't tell me about the chinese embargo; that's been years ago.

mod60rimfire:

If price is not the main factor, was the Czech VZ-58 (7.62x39) ever considered?

On the VZ-58 'thread', "Sturmgewehre" has a link to his Youtube evaluation.

I like my model 56 SKS's one is tacticoo ( came that way but I do have the original furniture ) and one is stock original. I like both of them a lot. I have been thinking about getting a different upper for one of the ARs. The uppers for the 7.62x39s are having problems getting extractors ( think Bushmaster used to supply the majority of them but has stopped for a while) I see the 5.45x39 uppers for $410 and another $165 for the BCG. Has anyone used the 5.45x39 upper on their AR; problems?

The SKS feels better in my hands than the AK I have...it is just a personal thing...Also the SKS is easier to hit stuff with consistently than my AK. AK is easier to clean than the SKS.

I did not vote because I think no mater which weapon you get on your list you will have a hoot and enjoy for many years. Everything is a trade off in one area or another; that is why it is always better to handle your future purchase before money exchanges hands.

+1 on the recommendation of a Saiga in another caliber. I'm looking at the Saiga 223 as my next purchase, but there's nothing wrong with the .308 either. I'd look for an ammo caliber produced in mass quantities in the USA.

The SKS is a good choice, too. My FiL has already promised that his SKS (early 70's model, origin unknown) will be mine someday.

Although, I'm a Mosin Nagant lover too. Nothing wrong with that giant boomstick. really, you can't go wrong with any of the three you have in the poll.

Jeff56, I already said that I own and like a few sks rifles. But this guy wants an sks or a 5.45 ak and for the now crazy difference in price and ammo he is better off buying a new, modern gun. As soon as I can find a deal I'm getting one myself, and I already bought the ammo. Every part of your entry was right, except as it applies to this guy.

I voted saiga I have absolutley nothing against the SKS I own a Russian and love it to death but I feel the SKS has become a little to common in this part of the world everyone and their brother has one not to mention when converted to a non-sporter configuration the Saiga can be a potent and very practical weapon not to mention 5.45 ammo is at just about an all time low in price, sorry but in the end I just have to be different.
