SKS

I also wouldn't recommend a receiver cover scope mount but would like to add that the ram-line stock is much more comfortable than the popular Monte Carlo stock. I have fairly small hands but the grip on the Monte Carlo seems to be sized for bigfoot's hands while the ram-line is setup for humans.

Removing the stock is actually pretty easy on the SKS. The little button at the rear of the trigger guard pushes in with a punch & rubber mallet. You will need to compress the action into the stock to get it to release, though. I usually put mine upside down on the rug, step or kneel onto the stock, then tap the pin & out she pops.

+1 to leaving it stock, though. My Yugo 59/66 shoots great, and I like the stock it came with. I will be re-finishing it soon just to have something new to do.

I know of no decent way to add optics to an SKS. Lots of companies make lots of junk to hang on it, none of it will hold zero long term IMO. If you want a toy to play with, then rock on with all the bolt on trinkets. We all have at some point. If you want to have a blast shooting it, then invest in ammo. Keep the stripper mag as well. When I take mine out, I have 20+ stripper clips loaded & ready in the box. The standard box feeds 100%, the 30 rounders not so much.

Get a set of Tech sights

I have had a Norinco SKS since they were $69 dollars and imported from China by the container load (about 20 years). The only SKS accessory I have ever found to be worth the money was Tech Sights. The big problem with the SKS is not the action, or the barrel. It's the short sight radius and the crappy sliding tangent sight. Tech sights are solid, and mounted close to the eye as an aperture sight should be. They're solidly made and well designed. I can now shoot 2 inch groups at 100.

As for the question of hunting with an SKS, ignore the naysayers. It's the equivalent of a 150 grain 30-30 and just as accurate as any of the old Winchester lever gun. But not quite as accurate as a Marlin 336 :).

Inside of 100 yards (where most whitetails are taken anyway) it will drop 'em. I proved that again yesterday morning on a nice doe. An SKS will put meat in your freezer.

I am going to buy an SKS and put a tapco t6 stock on it with a front grip for more stability the bayonet will be removed. NC starr has a scope mount set up that I know will work it replaces the action housing with one that is customer with a piccanty rail system on it Here's a link check it out

The only thing I haven't decided on is weather or not to buy a refurb or non refurb

That link was for Shawn Dodson.....he mentioned something about wanting one on the first page of this topic.

Thanks for the link, but that's not the stock.

The one I saw was wood laminated. The plies were stained alternating black and green. It had a really attractive appearance.

Cheers!

Generally speaking, Yugos shoot better than most others, because they don't have a chromed bore. Even the worst, though, were taken out of service and repaired at 5 MOA (15cm group at 100m) according to the Russian manual of arms.

Our lead writer did a pretty comprehensive piece on the Yugo 59/66a1 a while back: SKS Review

yah ive found it all at one place
the SKS is a refurbrished russian
the stock is a tapco t6 in black without the bayonet cut so there will be picatinny rails on the bottom and top of the handguard area.
i will be buying a williams peep sight not a scope
and a front grip for some added stability later i will add an extended magazine and a bipod.
will post pictures when its all done up should be sweet.
cheers guys and girls.

SureShot - has anyone bothered to tell you that imported SKS are covered under the law as C&R and when you start changing parts on it you need to make it US compliant or you are in violation of ATF regulations?
Tapco sells the compliance kit for $125.00.

Jim

Jim, considering he is in Canada, US law is probably of little comcern to him, and not ALL SKS's are C&R eligible. While most of whats availble on the market now (Yugo) are, Chinese SKSs are not now, nor have ever been, C&R eligible.

Thanks and yes if I was going to bring the gun to the states I would fret about said problem but I'm not because import laws are ridiculous. There are no laws against it here :) in the great white north
