Sleepy Creek Range(WV)

Back in late Spring the WV DNR shut down the Sleepy Creek Rifle range due to rounds leaving the range and traveling up to 1 mile downrange. I emailed the DNR last Monday and got a response back as to the current status.

"A site has been chosen and is now being evaluated by our engineer. We are awaiting his plans for the range."

Hopefully they have found another tract to build a range that isnt ON TOP of the mountain this time.

There was a news article a couple of months ago that the range re-opened but to only shotguns. I had planned on taking my son up there until I read that. You could also check the dnr website for an update.

I have been to Sleepy Creek numerous times, and I doubt that the bullets were coming from the range. I have seen people driving around there firing out of the windows of cars. (while driving) The range up there was never one that I would go to alone anyway, especially on a weekend. As much as I am against the closing of gun ranges, they needed to do something to control the less than responsible people who frequented that area. Hopefully they will reopen a new range that will have some volunteer RSO's to maintain some safety standards.

I thought about camping up there with my son since there is a nice lake on the property. I took a drive around to check it out and the whole place is shot up. It looked like WWIII up there. I wouldnt be caught up there after dark! I dont have enough armor for the truck for that! But it is a nice lake but I havent had time this summer to try much fishing.

Ha! I went camping up there one time and almost got shot. Some people were spotlighting at around 1:30am in the campground! I looked up to see what the light was and it was a guy hanging out the side of pickup with a rifle in one hand and a big flashlight in the other. (Not even hunting season) That was the first and last time I went camping there. It is a shame because it is a very nice area but the people that do these things ruin it for everyone else.
