slide-mounted safeties--disadvantages?

AFhack: The procedure can differ greatly from pistol to pistol. Concerning only "traditional" D/A (DA/SA) modes, I'll cite two examples:
(1) S&W "Third Generation" pistols (the 6906, for example). On these pistols, the gun is readied for D/A carry by chambering a round and then decocking it. It is now on safe and requires an upward movement of the safety/decocker lever (they are one and the same) to fire the weapon.
(2) HK USP (variant one). On this pistol, after the round is chambered the gun is readied for D/A carry by depressing the safety/decocking lever (also, one and the same), which decocks the gun but, unlike the aforementioned Smith, on the USP the lever returns by spring-action automatically to the off-safety fire mode. However, you can manually return the lever to "safe" if you so desire. When on safe, again unlike the Smith, to fire the pistol you move the lever in a downward (most would argue, ergonomically superior) direction.
