I am trying to field strip a 1903 32acp Pocket Hammerless and after turning the barrel 1/2 turn with the arrow/line lined up with the front frame edge, the slide refuses to come off forward. The barrel comes completely out from the front after turning it again in the slide, then pulling slide forward the slide stops, moving only about 1/2 inch forward from normal position when assembled. Is there something I am not doing, a release somewhere or what? The slide just sticks there and feels like it is stopped by something or catching somewhere. Does the barrel have to be inside the slide to allow the slide to come off the frame? I have looked at the Colt Forum descriptions for disassembley and it seems to show the slide just coming forward as a 1911 slide does after the barrel and recoil sping/guide are removed.

Will someone advise about this, please? I have the pistol cocked as directions stated must be. I have read that disassembling the frame further than field stripping has caused alot of people trouble assembling again. What is considered field stripping a Colt 32acp Pocket Hammerless Pistol?

It's been a while since I had one in my hands, but as I recall, when you turn the barrel 90 degrees, it should click out of position. Then you can pull the slide and barrel forward together.

When field stripping, you remove the slide and barrel from the frame and the barrel from the slide.

When reassembling, make sure you get the recoil spring fully on the guide and the guide fully seated in the frame before fitting the slide. Otherwise it is easy to kink the recoil spring.

Here is a YouTube video that may help.

The problem with the video is that because of (a) his great big hands getting in the way and (b) his having the camera zoomed in too tight, you can't see any of the important stuff. :scrutiny:

There is that. But you can hear him and there are other links available. (I didn't have time to watch them all) :)

Move the slide to rear until the arrow indicator reaches the perpendicular line on the slide at the arrow point. (should coincide with the front edge of the frame)

Turn the barrel to the left as far as it will go.

The slide (with barrel) may then be drawn forward from the receiver.

The recoil spring and guide are then free.

To remove the barrel from the slide, turn the barrel back to first position; it may then be drawn forward and removed.
