Hey guys and gals,
I bought this used Sig P225 and have run about 300 rounds through it. Cleaning it today I discovered the some of the finish to be worn off the left hand side of the frame rail. I don't remember seeing that when I first got the gun and am wondering if this type of wear is normal? I did some searching an apparently I should be using grease on the slides instead of the oil Rem-Oil Ive been using. Thanks for any input!

Grease it is! Should I be greasing the slides on my 1911 too instead of oil? thanks for the replies!

Oil is fine. Actually the only thing gun related than I use actual grease on is shotgun choke tubes. For some of the tighter fit ones a bit of grease just keeps them from seizing up in the barrel.

The key word is "lubricated". Some lubricants are more effective for sliding metal surfaces like the rails, but also can have some drawbacks.
If a quality lubricant is always applied, you wont have excessive wear with your Sig.

Many Sig P-series slides will "Rattle when Shaken" (not stirred), but the bbl locks up tight and they shoot like new.

It is a SIG with an alloy frame.

When the foremost SIG pistol smith specifically advises against using Rem-oil and using a persistent grease to prolong the life of the frame, I'm inclined to believe him

Thanks for the help, I've got some grease I'll put on the sig, and I'll be sure to keep an eye on the slides in the future

That's enough grease for six Sigs.
You don't have to use that much if you don't want. That guide is only for people who want to prolong the life of their frames....these aren't polymer pistols we are talking about

It is like folks who want to use single strand replacement recoil springs from Wolff in the Classic SIG, you can but it won't protect the frame as well as the factory twisted springs

Good and simple rule to remember is to grease what slides and oil what spins. I grease all of my slides and wear points on the frames of all of my auto pistols. Grease is a superior lubricant under high pressure and it stays where it's put better than oil.

I used tetra lube synthetic grease on my Sig's frame rails. it worked great!

I use Brian Eno's Slide Glide (medium) for my Sig P220 Compact.

I have owned it since new, and there is ZERO visible wear on the frame rails.

In the past, I owned P239 and P225, and only used oil to lube them........
Both of those pistols experienced visible wear on the aluminum frame.

By wear, I don't mean anything debilitating happened to them, but rather I could see bare metal where the slide had worn down the finish and slightly worn the actual frame metal......

With Slide Glide since new, my 220 has over 700 rounds through it....and not even a glimpse of visible wear!!

Yes, oil only will work....but grease will slow down the frame wear significantly!
