Sling walkthrough for newbies

I'm looking to get a sling for my AR15 and am finding the initial learning process very confusing. All the different types, how they attach to the rifle, and all the sling carry options are tricky for a newbie to figure out.

Anyone know of a good comprehensive guide to all the different options when looking for a sling?

How are you going to use your AR? That has a lot to do with what kind of a sling to choose.

I have no experience with the new crop of tacti-cool slings, but have fired many rounds with the GI canvas sling.
If you just want a carry-strap, or one of those tactical-types that holds your rifle butt-up-muzzle-down across your chest, I have no opinion.

BUT, if you want to use a sling for something other than carrying your weapon (and reduce your group size by up to 50%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) get the plain-vanilla GI web sling and learn to use it (http://www.rwva.org/yabbse/index.php?topic=620.0) .

singlepoint slings are a wonder if you have a well positioned loop to put it through.

Can be had for <5$ DIY.

Comfy carry with firearm draped over your back, or comfy carry with the pistol grip resting at your palm but supported by your shoulders.
