Slug Gun

Here is something not many of you have seen. It is a slug gun. These are
used at Friendship. Matches are at 100 thru 500 yards. It is not that all un common to see targets with all 10 shots in the little 1 1/2 inch "10" ring
at 200 yds. The action is sealed, and these use a paper patch 2 piece bullet.
Normal caliber is 45. These shoot about 1200 fps. I have see the guys shoot
these and they weigh their powder charges right as they load them on ditigal
powder scales. "In weight" not volume!. These are really quite the thing to
see shot.

Used to dedicate one day just to watch these guys. I had a friend here in central IL that had an original Billinghurst from Civil War times, had it all, both moulds..base and nose, swage, patch cutter, false muzzle, starter, etc. We shot it at 100 yards against his 52 Winchester. Well under one moa. pure lead base, hard lead nose, bond paper patch.

could have bought it in 1975 for five bills but was a poor apprentice. It sold a few years ago for 35K.

Dumb me. Should have taken out a loan.

those things make the ground move when they go off. A lot are fifty cal and use a couple hundred grains of black.

Went up to such a match at Blue Ridge, near Shartlesville PA many years ago. that's a whole different level of persnickety shooters.

Well, I guess the reason I can't see the pictures has to do with the computer I'm using; it must be blocking them for some reason. My mistake, sorry.

Expanding on the stuff they use...two moulds, one for bullet nose (hard lead) and another for the base (soft lead), a swage to put the two together. A patch cutter to cut a paper cross patch for the bullet, a false muzzle to center the bullet in the patch and the bore, a bullet starter to get the bullet into the bore, and a sealed primer holder so no gas is lost out the nipple. Takes these guys an hour to shoot ten shots.
Barrels are often two to three inches across the flats, hand lapped and choked a thousandth or two from back end to muzzle, and scopes are usually Lyman super targetspot 20X or more. Charge weight of powder is sometimes in a multiple of 100 grains.
Not much different in intensity from modern benchrest shooters in terms of gadgets and paraphernalia.
