How do you do it?

I'm using a 590 and trying to figure out what works best. Just curious what other people do.

I've noticed that if you reach into the loading port and push the shell holder out of the way when you subsequently rack the slide the next shell in the magazine will fall out the bottom of the action instead of moving onto the loading tray. This seems to be a bit faster than trying to dump the shell out of the ejection port, but I'm not sure if works every time.

My old J.C.Higgins has a magazine disconnecter that helps out.

For whatever reason I am not too good at dumping one out of an open breech. I can pump once and tip that thing sideways and frontways and everyways until the cows come home and more often than not, the dang shell fights me all the way. I'd imagine it could give me an edge while a troll laughed his butt off though. I am usually down-loaded by one and I just feed one (in this case a slug) into the mag, rack the slide, and let the SG (an 870 for me) do its job. My 870 is much better at popping out the unwanted shell than I am.

I try to practice loading and unloading the same way. I try to always load through the magazine tube and then pump the 870. I tried Dave's method of quickly topping off, but Ill need a lot more practice with that until I feel comfortable. For a slug selection drill, my 870 is a six round tube, downloaded by one, chamber empty. I have the space in the tube to immediatly load up a slug, or if I have been shooting the buckshot, can still load a slug into the tube, and then pump the 870. I prefer to let the mechanism of the shotgun do the unloading, rather then me fishing around in the chamber for a shell. Either way, I carry enough ammo on board that I can afford to dump the buckshot round on the ground during the slug selection drill.
