I vote Irish Setter Wingshooters. They are one of the most comfortable boots I’ve ever had on my feet.

I have a pair of 8” Wingshooters, I think style #896. They are waterproof and lightly insulated (400gm Thinsulate). I use them a lot for winter boots and for Fall/Spring hiking. They seem to have plenty of grip.
The original Wingshooters came out in the 1940’s and quickly became the hunting boot to have back then.

Went to buy the wingshooters at a redwing store and was told they didnt have any in my size. Cant find them anywhere so I emailed redwing and they said only 4 stores in the US have my size and they are not expected back in stock until next year. Going to give the closest redwing store a call today and have them shipped.

In all honesty, I work at a Redwing store. We are experiencing a lot of backorders in various styles, due to covid...

When I talked to the Redwing guy yesterday he said a pair of boots he ordered in april came in yesterday. Holy crap thats a long time for a backorder!

If you live in the Southern US, you should consider some snake boots for at least early season hunting.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

NE, give the Chippewa smooth sole, impregnated with sand, for ice a look. The water proof 9” is a very nice upland boot, rain, snow or shine. Just watch where they are made, originals were made in Canada for Canadian hunters and outdoorsmen.

Here’s another one for you guys. Snug or loose for an all leather boot? Snug as in tennis shoe snug or loose as in thick wool sock loose right out of the box.

I like Irish Setters and Danner both. I do a lot of walking in them. My favorites are Vaportrex Irish Setters. Goretex is my friend. I need sturdy boots to protect my old feet and I hunt rough ground in all weather.

A few years ago I bought a pair of Basspro shop brand (Redhead?) leather boots for upland fowling. Best footwear purchase ever for $200-ish. They replaced my Hanwag Hunter GTX boots (which quite literally fell apart after 15 seasons and 300+ days of hard terrain) for approximately half the price and I'd rate them even better than the revered Handwags.

The alternative was Irish Setter Elk Tracker which felt almost identical and it was a coin toss at the time. These were a bit lighter so I chose them.

I'm tempted towards Meindl Narvik now, they feel very comfortable and are available in large sizes, but they're insulated and more suited to cold weather.

I pretty much abandoned wearing any shoes that aren't gore-tex lined, except for flip flops.
I've also abandoned wearing boots that aren't a variation of a hiker, including for work and hunting. All the support, none of the weight. Low-cut, 6", 6" insulated...covered for everything I do.

I have owned Danner and Rocky hunting boots and have no complaints with them in general, if you're set on an actual hunting boot. I haven't had any luck with Merrell of any kind-none of the 3 pairs I've owned lasted 6 months. I've been wearing Salomon pretty much exclusively for the last 10+ years.

8" Redwings for me.
Pricey although I bought a pair in 1986 for rambling around the Mojave, so I used them hard and sent them to the "mother ship" last year for a rebuild.
Now they're good as new.
That's a real value.

Merrell hiking boots. They work great for mountain hikes and flat lands also. I wear them hunting for upland and deer scouting. I wear Muck Boots in wet areas and deer hunting.

I often wear LL Bean Maine hunting shoe (rubber foot, leather upper) mine were just rebuilt 2nd time for $41. Had em over 25 years.
I have a pair of Danner pronghorns. I bought them for an archery Utah elk hunt. I wore them to break in before the hunt. Tore a heel off crossing a rockslide. Fortunately I’m the guy that carries superglue in my pack. I glued it up while eating my lunch on the side of that mountain. I was disappointed but to be fair, the heel remains attached and I still wear them bowhunting Illinois whitetail.
I also wore an old pair of Russel upland boots years ago. I don’t know if they are still available but they were great boots.
