Hello all. I don't usually post in this section, but I browse it often. For Christmas I got my first assisted opening knife. It's a Kershaw Pack rat. I love the fit and feel of this knife.

I bought a new pair of pants this week, and they didn't have very deep pockets. The knife didn't seem to fit in the pocket well, so I clipped it into my back pocket. We see where this is going now yes? I took my pants down to do my business and the knife popped out of my pocket, clanged on the rim and went into the drink. Sparing the details, it been washed and dried. Since the "incident" I noticed that the knife has a small rattle or a shake to it in the open position. It doesn't seem to affect the function at all, but is is a minor nuisance.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing the rattle? I've not had it apart yet to look and see if the shock of dropping it caused something to come loose in the assist mechanism. I was afraid springs would come flying out.

I would love some insight.

Matt

I have a kershaw blur that OCCASIONALLY develops a little bit of the same issue you described, but it's a very hard use knife. A #5 (at least on mine) torx driver to the center pivot will tighten it up so it won't rattle anymore. Just don't over do it as the action will become stiff and not open as freely anymore.

Edit: I would not suggest taking it completely apart, it's prone to uh, "autoexplosive disassembly" which voids Kershaw's rather excellent no questions asked warranty service. They replaced the blade of mine after I tried using it as a prybar in my younger, dumber days.

It is a Made in the USA knife. That's one of the reasons I asked for that specific model. Heck, I didn't even want to mention the unexpected dip in the pool to you guys, but I thought you might appreciate it. I'm glad I didn't attempt to take it apart, I thought "explosive disassembly" might be the case. The rattle doesn't appear to affect the function of the knife at all, and is only apparent when the assist mechanism isn't under tension. as soon as the blade starts to meet resistance, it goes away.

That Gentle Rattle

I have a Kershaw Packrat. Had it for a few months now.

When it's open, it has that same "gentle rattle" if you shake it. Doesn't make that noise when it's closed.

Mine has never been for a swim.

Works fine, opens like it should, does its job and doesn't complain.

I would imagine yours is fine.

I have a Kershaw Needs Work...best darn knife I've ever owned. I've had it about 6 months...when its open it has the rattle (very slight rattle).

It does that because when its open there is no pressure on the "open assist"...I'm a heavy haul truck driver and I use this knife hard, its cut everything from mud flaps to heavy ropes to deer.

Your knife is fine...
