I have a question about primers. I had a friend give me 2000 CCI 450 Small Mag Primes. Not sure what I can use them for but I never turn down free reloading supplies.

I've always used CCI 400 Small Rifle when loading 223 ammo. My question is can I use these CCI 450 Mag Primers. All my manuals tell me to use the Small Rifle. Cant find data on Small mag Primers anywhere.

I have a few pounds of Varget, AR Comp and CFE223 powder to choose from for reloading my 223 rounds.

Thanks,
Don

Can you use them for .223 Remington? Yes, and just like any load recipe change work up the load especially if you were running CCI 400 with a load pushing the maximum. Magnum primers are generally suggested based on powder, like ball and spirical type powders. Anyway, yes, you can use them.

They will work just fine. If your loads are mid range, load and go. If you are near or at max charge back off a little and work back up. I mainly use ball powders and have always used mag primers and have loaded right up next to max without any issues.

I normally run 25 grains of Varget and 25.2 on my AR Comp. CFE223 I'm still playing with with loads.

I use a magnum primer or a CCI#41 primer on all my AR .223 ammo. I only use a standard SRP when loading for my .223 bolt rifle. Magnum primers work just fine in the .223, as a matter fact they will work will in most cartridges. Just rework your load like you would when changing any component like said above.

Like he just said, totally excellent substitute for CCI #41 in 223/5.56.

If you hunt or shoot in the cold cold winter, magnum primers ignite spherical powders quite well.

Kinda wasted in anything else unless your data specifically calls for it.

Just to add to my other post, when I'm loading .223 ammo for an AR-15 I first use a CCI#41 primer followed by a CCI-450 primer. If necessary I will go to a Remington 7 1/2 primer then a CCI-400 primer. The powders are H335 or TAC if I have no H335. I have used A LOT of CCI-400 primers and never had a problem but to be safe I use a #41 or 450 when possible.

In my bolt action Howa-1500 I use a CCI-400 primer with Varget.

That is just what I do. I'm not recommending it for anyone, just reporting my way.

The 2015 Annual Hodgdon Reloading Manual has an interesting article by Brian Pearce on p 60, well worth reading if you've ever wondered about using mag primers for .223.

Yes, they are safe. Just work up like you would if you changed any other component. Often the difference between brands is more than the difference between standard and magnum in another. Some mfg's only offer one small rifle primer for standard or magnum.

I used CCI 400 (standard) and CCI 450 (magnum) primers interchangeably in my .223 loads for many years without a problem. But, read on.

At the time I loaded much of my .223, my loads using IMR-4198 were well below the maximum published in the then-existing manuals (late 1970's, early 1980's), but later editions of those manuals now show those loads to exceed the current maximum. I'm not in any way suggesting you exceed current published maximum on any load, but merely pointing out that my past experience with loads that today exceed published maximums - some of which used magnum primers - was that none caused a problem and none showed a material difference on the chronograph.

As others have already advised, any time you change a component you should retreat to a starting load and work your way up.
