An idea so bad it could only have sprung from the bowels of the US Dept. of Justice.

I'll wager that an afternoon's worth of yard york will affect a person's grip to the extent that this "smart gun" will not recognize it.

Professor unveils prototype firearm that senses shooter's unique grip

In the era of James Bond-style weaponry, a professor in Belgium claims he's come up with a sure-fire way to make sure guns are only fired by a single owner, and is unveiling his version of a so-called "smart gun."

Jacques Destine, a microelectronics expert at the University of Liege, used his grant from the U.S. Justice Department to develop a "safe" handgun, and says he's finally designed a weapon which fires only when it recognizes the unique grip of the shooter.

"We have made a weapon that only fires when it is meant to fire," Destine told the French-language La Derniere Heure. "Our idea was to make sure that the gun could only be used by its owner."

According to the report, the new weapon contains 250 electronic receptors which remember the precise way a person holds the gun.

Destine found that no two people have the exact same grip, and he believes unique grip patterns are as reliable as fingerprints in identifying the rightful owner of a handgun.

He says the high-tech firearm can be programmed for someone's right and left hand, which could prove invaluable to police officers injured during a shootout.

The device can also reportedly be set for use only in evenings, on weekends, or even for hunting purposes by adjusting settings for a particular firing angle.

Big problem alert:

If you are injured you WILL hold the grip differently.

If you are under stress you WILL hold the grip differently.

I could go on and on, but why bother.

Golie - it's worse than that -

What if someone else needs the gun
for protection ?
What if
Your hand is dirty ?
Bloody ??
Cut ?
Sore ?
The list is almost endless.
This type of 'technology' in tested
in labs until some starry-eyed inventor
is convinced it's 'bulletproof' ( no pun
intended) and then it's unleashed
to the gleeful squeals of those who simply
are incapable of thinkng near the
'edge of the box' (let alone outside
the box).
Don't worry - the FIRST failure that causes
injury or death will initiate a lawsuite that
will crush this whole idiotic idea.

Test:

cover it with blood and pick it up upside down with the non-dominant hand and pull trigger with little finger. Will it fire.

I'm sure little Jimmy McGreevey has invited him join him at Drumthwacket.

ARE THEY NUTS?

DING!

Your ability to defend yourself has expired. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

And what "firing angle" might be appropriate only for hunting and nothing else?

We have made a weapon that only fires when it is meant to fire

Um, they've had those for like....100 years or more. Pretty much the only way to get a modern gun to fire involves actuating the trigger.

As with most ideas, they are great in theory, then go *boink* in practice. What are these "receptors" keying off of? What about when I want to let a friend shoot? If a person has enough gumption to steal a gun, unless it is a spur of the moment thing, then they'll figure out how to disable any sort of electronic lock-out. Pretty much anything mechanical can be bypassed with enough time and skill.
