I'm trying to educate myself a little about .22 cal Smith & Wesson revolvers, but can't find one in local gunshops. However, there seem to be a good number of 17-4's and a lesser number of 17-2's available on the auction sites. Is the 17-4 the equal of, and as well regarded as older model 17's like the 17-2?

You could fit what I know about Smith's in a thimble, so those with experience and wisdom to impart are encouraged to post.

Thanks!

It's my understanding that the original version Smiths have no dash #. Later on in production, improvements or design changes will have a dash 2, then 3,etc. It may be a improved gas ring, pinned barrel, ejector rod shroud. The basic models will be the same for the most part.

My 17-4 is among my favorite handguns. It still has the pinned barrel of the older 17-2 which is nice. All S&W rimfires I believe have the recessed chambers to the present day. Go to www.smith-wessonforum.com for more info on this if you would like.
