I'm thinking of adding a couple of smith revolvers to my collection. If any of you have any pics of your models 629 (.44MAG) or 686 (.357MAG), could you please post them. I only buy new so I know they will be the versions with the lock. I have only saw the pics on the Smith web site, and they don't show anything but one angle. Also, you guys that own either of these models, please tell me if they are any good or not.

ok, I'll bite. I'm no photographer, but I just uploaded a couple of pics of my 686 for you. I bought it new about 2 years ago, but just recently had Mike Carmoney, a Nationally ranked USPSA wheelgun shooter tweak it a bit for IDPA SSR. Didn't really need to be tweaked, but I indulged myself a little. Action job, convert to DAO, chamfered cylinders, aftermarket sights.

Are they any good? I don't know what your intended purpose is, but I just shot & posted this, along with a few others, 2 days ago. Normally, with this gun, I'll do 7 & 10 yards rapid fire strings, but thought I'd evaluate it's performance at longer distances on my last visit to the range. This target was one of 4 5-shot groups, shot 15 yards, standing, 2-handed, unsupported, double action. Just pick up the gun and shoot 5 aimed deliberate shots. Average group size was 1.2", while the one shown is just under an inch. Its accuracy surprised me, especially since 1) the 'smith work really didn't include accurization beyond an action job and 2) my reloads weren't optimized for accuracy. They are simply a starting load listed in the Lee manual and should make minor pf (4.0gr W231 over 158gr plated RN). It'd be fun to see what it'll shoot with a little optimization (and windage adjustment ).
