Smith and Wesson 686 - Are These Original Grips?

I love the S&W 686 no-dash. I know they had a recall on it. Have you checked to see if the gun's been altered? It should be visible on the part of the frame visible when you open the cylinder. It should have an "M" stamp if it's been altered. Too bad you didn't get the wood grips in the deal. Mine are beautiful. I've got two 686s and I haven't shot either one!

Here's one of my 686s with my Ruger Security-Six, which I love more than any .357 I've ever used. It's like a
feather compared to my 686! I think I'd prefer a 4-inch over my 6-inch, but if it's a Security-Six, I'll take a 6-inch
every time.

And this is my 686 no-dash.

One of mine I took the belt sander to in the attempt to slim the grips down. Was kinda fun until realizing that I liked the Hogue Monogrip and why was I working away when for ~$16 (at the time) was an easy solution. I don't know what happened to those grips now that I think of them.

As far as I can tell mine does not have the "M" stamp anywhere, so I expect it hasn't been altered. Does anyone know what exactly the change was and why?

Mine has not be modified based on the Recall Document that ColtPythonElite posted. Thanks for posting the information.

So, should I have mine done, or leave it stock? I'm using it just for fun. It functions perfectly as is.

I had mine done. It's a relatively simple procedure, allows you to use .357 ammo without worrying about the cylinder binding or getting stuck, and doesn't affect the value of your gun.

This is the style that was on my no dash M686, and was still being used up to the dash 3.

Smith and Wesson did use aftermarket grips on occasion, so I can't say that every M686 had the cocobolo grips. I am the original purchaser of this M1989 45 LC, it is my recollection the Hogue grips are original.

I never worry about how dirty or clean my smokeless powder is. Never tried Blue Dot and usually default to 2400 and H110 for heavy loads.
