I have a certain affinity for nicely tuned Smith and Wesson revolvers, be them k,l,n framed. The trouble is finding a "tuned" revolver, there are many shall we say poor attempts of which can be seen at gun shows across the USA. The second issue is paying for such a task which is unreasonably expensive, what is a guy to do? So my first thought was learn to do this yourself, so with the magically swipe of a charge card an order containing Power Custom fixtures, grace screw divers, quality punches, and a assortment of stones and etc was on the way.

My first victim, oh I mean project is a model 10-5 with 4 inch slim jim barrel which is very abused. By abused I mean no finish, copious amounts of rust, some one has taken a file and worked on the trigger guard, as well as being out of time.

My declaration of intent is as follows, re-time the cylinder, machine alter a 4 inch heavy barrel to 3 inch, perform a trigger job and smooth out the double action pull where it will still maintain its service pistol reliability, and if I feel froggy enough alter the square butt over to a round butt.

My questions are what is a standard for the single action trigger pull weight as well as double action poundage?

You are braver than I am. I just give my gunsmith (sandburrgunranch.com) $120.00 and he reduces the double action trigger pull 25%. He got mine down to 10lbs or less and they still have the stock springs! FYI, my 686 SSR is 2.5 lbs. S.A. & 9 lbs. 13 oz. D.A. My 640 PRO is a even 10 lbs. D.A.

Not sure if you have any gunsmithing or general mechanical knowledge. None of the options, except for maybe converting from a square to round butt or if you have to alter the ejector rod to fit a shorter barrel, are exactly rocket science on a S&W with the proper tools and know how.

But, for what you are wanting to do, do yourself a favor and buy Kuhnhausen's Shop Manual on S&W revolvers.

The $34.99 for the book is less than the parts that can be ruined during action jobs. There are other authoritative works where such is described as well but Kuhnhausen does a pretty good job.

Second, there are several gunsmiths around on this forum, BBBBill among others is someone well worth listening to. Part of the issue is the degree of smoothness in the entire action's parts and knowing what to polish, how much, and what to leave alone.

Unless converting to DAO, the single action should generally not be monkeyed with as it is easy to make a firearm unsafe.

If you have jigs and nothing coarser than 1000 grit, there is little likelihood of being able to get to the point of causing damage and/or rendering the firearm unsafe.

It’s when folks start altering geometry where trouble can occur. Or I. The case of a good gunsmith, heroic greatness.
