I have a Smith and Wesson Model 39. From the research I've done, I believe it's a 3rd generation since it only has 4 numbers above the model number. However, every place I've found that helps identify what the numbers are, it doesn't have what numbers my model has.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with identifying it. And about how much I can get for this gun.

I can post pictures if you need me to, and I can provide the numbers if I need too.

I know that some people will block out numbers but since it's only 4 numbers I;m not sure what to block out.

Thanks in advance. :)

If it is a 3rd Gen gun, those are the model numbers...the last is the finish, the one before it gives the action options

We can't give much information without the numbers...and pictures would be nice too

The letters and numbers above model number are the serial number.

If it's a 3rd gen pistol it will have 4 digits comprising the model number, like a 3906, 3904, etc ... unless it's a Value Line gun, which is still a 3rd gen gun, but will have a 3 digit model number, like the 909.

If it's a 2nd gen gun it'll have 3 digits making up the model number, like a 439, 639, etc.

If it's just a 39, are there any dashes following the "39" digits, like a "-1" or "-2" (which would identify some subsequent revisions of the 1st gen Model 39)?

For price info, your best bet is to check gunbroker. You do not need an account to look at current auctions, but for real value info you need to log in and search completed auctions. Looking at auctions with no bids won't help, and looking at auctions with time left can be deceiving as well. You can also compare photos of the guns on auction with yours as you will likely find various prices for guns in different condition.

In good condition (no rust, no pitting, most of the original finish intact, a few spots with bright metal showing due to wear, no broken parts) a model 39-2 is probably worth $400 to $425. Especially with the original box and original S&W marked magazines.

There were some early steel frame 9mm's - not 100% if those were model 39 or 59 or both. (The 59 is the same gun with a wider body for a double stack magazine). Early steel frame first gen 9mm's are worth quite a bit more. Most first gen 39's are 39-2. Not sure but something to research how much more an allow frame no-dash is worth.

Supica's book on S&W is a great resource. Maybe you can browse one in a store or gun show. Maybe even a library.
