Does anyone know of any documentation or is familiar with adjusting the trigger weight on the Smith and Wesson Model 41?

Our school's pistol team is about to compete in an NRA pistol sectional and we just discovered the trigger pull on our pistols don't meet the 2.2 lbs it needs.

I know it involves adjusting a wedge with a bunch of notches on top of the trigger and putting the trigger spring on the top notch, but I was wondering if there is any solid documentation or a how-to guide. The normal owners manual that comes with this firearm is woefully inadequate.

We are poor and don't really want to pay for the services of a gunsmith :)

Because of todays litigeous society, I don't know anyone who will recommend how to adjust a match trigger to anything below three pounds.
It can be done, but you would be best served by sending the guns back to Smith and Wesson with a detailed letter voicing your concerns and desires.
Include school credentials and the Company may do the work for free under the Lifetime Warranty Agreement.
I cannot comment on exactly where they may agree to set the trigger pull weight though.
That would be up to them. HTH

From the right side of the frame, drive the trigger pin in far enough to clear the trigger
pull adjustment lever. Moving the lever to the rear increases weight of pull, while
movement forward decreases the pull. When the desired weight of pull is reached, push
the trigger pin back into place, making sure it is aligned with one of the notches in the
adjustment lever. Never attempt to lighten the weight of the trigger pull by stoning or re-cutting the sear/hammer engagement surfaces.

+1 to NVMM

If your NRA match is following the rules to the letter, they will check your triggers with an NRA Certified Weight Set.

Spring type trigger pull scales are not accurate enough for you to use for adjusting your Model 41's yourself, unless you go way over the weight limit to be on the safe side.

This appears to be an important match for your group and I also see you are from Texas. If you are near San Antonio, give Alex Hamilton of Ten Ring Precision a call.
He is one of the few good 41 smiths available.
Moving the trigger rebound spring wedge, "may" or "may not" give you the weight you need. In most cases it won't....
Some 41s come with great triggers, while others need extensive rework of the sear, hammer, and other components.

Tell him I sent you..

Anybody able to give me the procedure for complete strip ( not just field strip) and assemble for S&W 41.

I have purchased a very lightly ised older 41 and the guy really left it all gummed up.

Also even though I have change the trigger bar spring and soaked it the bar still sticks some times....

I do have the right tools and have done this many time on my P229 but there I have the luxury of the armorers CD.

Thanks

If you need instructions, I don't recommend you try to do it.

I gunsmithed Model 41's in the service AMU teams, and do not recommend complete dissembly unless something breaks, which almost never happens.

Take the barrel, slide, and grips off:
Hose it out good with gun scrubber, small model paint brushes, and dental picks if needed.

Drip dry, or blow out with compressed air.

Spray with Rem-Oil, and drip dry or blow out again.

That should be all it needs.

The S&W 41 is a good reason to investigate ultrasonic cleaners, but failing that RC's recommendation is solid info.

1911Art.........that's one of the best maintenance guide type things I've ever sen on the net. Thanks.
