Smith and Wesson pistols?

Besides the pic of the newer S&W 1911 that I posted, I have owned
several Smith & Wesson auto-loaders. Namely, several 39-2's, 2x59's,
a 6906, and this S&W 1911. All have been flawless in function and
reliability. BTW, there is not a firearm made that has the beauty of
a NIB factory nickel model 39-2 9m/m. Simply put, its a goregous
firearm that was really ahead of its time~!;) :D

I have a 6906 that I bought for the paltry sum of $290......in the box with spare magazines, all manuals, night sights and brand new Galco holster.

I bought it "just because" but it carries nicely and shoot pretty good to. I think they are under-rated guns.

10-ring,

If you have not found a Smith auto that does not fit your hands yet then you either have some weird hands or are not trying too hard. S&W probably has the largest variety of semi-auto guns on the market today then all of the manufacturers combined together. I don't know how they keep up with them all or if anyone can remember all of the model #'s they have made in the past twenty years.

aaronkelly,

How about them 6906's? Shoot superbly and carry excellent. I have been trying to check out the new-new 4013's as they look like they are built off of the 6906 frame. I agree that the 6906 is very under rated and mostly over-looked.

Smith and Wesson pistols?

Bah, they're worthless! Worthless I say!

Send them all to me at this address:

:D

No, I can't say "worthless" is how I describe S&W autoloaders of the 3rd generation. Come to think of it, very many of the 2nd generation weren't at all shabby! About the only thing that needs improvement out of the box, for my taste, would be the DA/SA trigger.

I have yet to find a S&W pistol that fit my hands....

What was the problem? Too wide from side to side? Too long in the handle, front to back? Too short (couldn't get enough fingers on it)?

I have odd smallish hands. The Older 4013 fits my right hand perfect but terribly in my left hand. Oh well. The 5906 feels fine in my left hand, but not perfect, and it feels wrong in my right hand.

I have the sw39 9mm. works like a champ, easy to strip/clean and maintain, and a reasonable perfomer (doesnt jam like my High Standard). Wouldn't give it up.

Colt MKIV/Series 70 45
SW 39 9mm
Ruger MKII 22LR
HS Victor 22LR

I carry a SW 5906 almost every day. I love mine. I've never had a FTF or any kind of problem of any kind with it.

My favorite thing about it is the look though. It's just a fine looking weapon and comes standard with all the doohickie gimmickry that commonly gets added aftermarket:

Ambidextrous safety
Fronstrap serrations
3 dot sights
rear sight serrations
recessed and flushed takedown pin
checkered trigger guard
high cut under the trigger guard

It's got a great feel in the hand and points very naturally right where I want it to.

I own a 908 and a CS-9.......uterly relable......never a hitch. I'm a wheel-man so they don't get carried or shot much....but when I want to go "pistol" I reach for the Smith's. ( Actually I have a 9mm Beretta Cougar I like too...but that's another thread. )

All I can say about S&W 3rd Generation pistols are that they are solid, dependable, well made and will last a lifetime. Many can be found on the used market for good prices. Even the first and second generations are very good pistols though they can be hard to find at good prices. The 1911 series is all around excellent pistols for the price. The Sigma series was a bad joke, even though they where reliable pistols. The new M&P series seems to have a loyal following though they are too new to know if they will give Glock a run for the money. I

+1 for the S&W 3 Rd. generation DAO autos. The 4586 in particular is a great buy for a 45 ACP auto. The Sigma's I personally don't care for ..........

great guns. I have a 59 from 1979 still shoots great, all metal although alloy frame. Just got a 910s with crimson trace grips which is nice and a couple generations after the old 59. have now fallen for SIG's very smooth and still very safe DA/SA action. For me the SIG shoots better but I'll always keep and add S&W to my collection. If it's good and made in USA I have to support them. Go to a range and rent everything to see how it works in your hand. Just don't let price make the decision..

My first semi-auto pistol was a 5904 (a "third generation", 15-shot 9mm, blue steel slide, aluminum frame and adjustable sights) back in 1991. It functioned perfectly - 90% of my criteria for a good gun - but was not as accurate as the SIG P228 I traded it in on. (One would expect increased accuracy for $200 more.;)) And I'm extremely pleased with the M&P 9mm compact I bought recently. I'm keeping an eye out for a 3913.
