some time back i was told smith & wesson made poor autoloaders. at the time, i didn't care much because i was buying other guns, and wasn't interested enough to check in on it.

recently i came across a smith 4006 in serviceable condition. what is the rep of this pistol? what is mag capacity? are spare mags readily available?

the gun seems to fit me well enough, has adjustable sights, and is a heavy little beastie...

thanks for your insight!

IIRC 11 rounds capacity, the one I shot was reliable enough for the few boxes I put through it, accuracy seemed OK to me at the time, but it was the first .40 cal I ever fired and looking back on it after 7 years and tens of thousands of rounds the groups were quite large, but that may have been me and my lack of training.

The 4006 is still produced today, so mags should be available from S&W.

Budsgunshop.com has really cheap mags 5 for $30 if I remember correctly. I bought my 4006 from CDNN about 6 months ago....it looks new and has an amazing trigger and groups very well at the range. It's not a carry gun but I really like it.

I cant say enough good things about the steel frame S&W autos. I have had a single fail to feed (that was the only thing ive ever had wrong) with my 5906 and that was from a new Pro-mag magazine. One of these days im going to get a few more 3rd gen S&Ws but for now ill have to be happy with the 5906.

Heavy, but accurate and reliable as all get out. Ive outshot guys with modded out Glocks with mine. Buy it with confidence if you decide on it.

Yep, they're junk. I'll take pity on anyone who wants to get rid of their crappy 3rd gen Smith by offering $50 apiece to dispose of them........

Seriously, though, fantastic guns. Accurate, reliable, durable and, IMO, quite ergonomic. I like mine:

I've had my 4006 about 10 years. I honestly don't recall any problems I've ever had with it. It's a very well made pistol. The trigger was a little gritty to begin with, but it smooths out over time. Accuracy is good.

Radagast is correct, the "high capacity" mags hold 11 rounds (yellow follower), the standards hold 10.

thanks for the help, fellas... about what i suspected. i'll go and see if i can make a deal on it this morning...

that would be why i asked - i didn't know. it wasn't an indictment on smith at all, but a question - which is where i get the most value from these boards...
