I have a Colt Cobra, a Smith 38, and a Charter Arms Undercover. The .38 snubbie I like most, and shoot most often is a Smith M649.
The M649 is my "almost always" gun. I carry it everwhere the law doesn't keep me from carrying, and also use it as a house gun.

The 649 is the most accurate of my snubnoses and is the easiest to shoot. This may not be true of all 649s as my gun has had some mild trigger work. The gun is a good one, and I like the stainless finish for a carry gun.

Anyone else like this snub?

I bought one early this year, with lock, dreaded MIM, etc. and had to send it back to S&W to have the barrel turned in. That took one week, almost to the minute, from when I handed it to the FedEx driver, until he handed it back. I carry it with an older 640 that has had some TLC which makes it a fine, fast, close-up defensive gun. The 649 came back with the barrel corrected, and a much smoother action than before. It was obvious they had opened it up, and had done more than correct the barrel. These guns together make a perfect "set", and adapt to several carry modes. The 649 has everything good that the 640 has, plus SA capability for a little more distance.

My father bought one years ago. I've carried it from time to time, but it's a little heavy for what I was doing - pocket carry. OTOH, it's a good size for shooting a box or so of 125gr. .357s. The gun came with an excellent DA pull and an almost scary SA pull. Not quite a hair trigger, but definitely a good target trigger.

M649

In the past 40+ years, I've had Charter Arms, Colt, Smiths, and Taurus snubs. The most accurate is the 649. At 15 yards, using a 3" bulleye target, I can place 5 rounds at the 5 o'clock postion, with all holes touching.
Of course, that's using it single action.

The hump-backed thing looks like a single hump camel but it does shoot very well. I bought mine NIB in `97 or `98 and I have about 1,000 + rounds through it. My only complaint is that it's too heavy for pocket carry. It is no problem with a paddle, IWB, or ankle holster.

I semi-retired it when I bought the 340SC.
