At those prices, I'd have to go with BOTH guns. As for an either/or, the S&W 13 is the perfect house/travel gun, in my opinion. In the home a good .38 +P is great; for cross country hiking travel, a hot .357 usually does the job. I remember hearing the story of a newly wed couple hiking on their honeymoon. A black bear began stalking them and the husband heroically volunteered to go get help (since the woman couldn't keep up). When he got back with help, the bear had partially eaten his new wife. Bottom line: If they'd had a 3-inch .357 on them, chances are they could have eaten the bear!
A good .38 Spc. goes a long way these days; however, a .357 is still a mighty powerful round to pack. It can punch holes in car tires and in vans and trucks when necessary. As for N-frame .357s, they're usually is pretty good shape because they never get carried anywhere. That's why the 13 is a "perfect" gun in so many ways.
