I am now a Model 41 owner and was wondering if any one had and does or don'ts for it (ammo types, feed problems, stove piping, etc). I have been shooting a tricked out Ruger Mark II in compitions and never had any problems. Thanks

Congrats on the Model 41. I have the 7" barrel version and it is my favorite 22. I have good luck with CCI Pistol Match and Aquila Match Pistol ammo. I use mine in smallbore pistol silhouette matches (which shoots out to 100m).

You may already know, but if not, you need to shoot a few shots of the target ammo before testing for groups in the 22 world. This lets the lube on the bullets to season the barrel.

I'll second going over to rimfirecentral.com.

What are your plans for the M41?

Bullseye matches. I'm just tring something different my Ruger has done very good by my and still is but you never know what you could do unless you try and I was not paying 2Gs for a Hammerli. (well not yet):what:

Congrats on the M41. They are great guns. I shot a 7" barrel M41 years ago in Bullseye competition but sold it when I stopped competing. Some years later I realized my mistake and bought a 5.5" HB M41 gun. Also bought a 2X Leupold EER scope but it was a lot of trouble switching from iron sights to scope. So I bought a 5.5" heavy barrel (only) from Gil Hebard and mounted the scope on this barrel. Since M41 barrels can be removed and switched in a few seconds, I can now shoot either way I want. My gun likes Win HV ammo and CCI Std Vel ammo. Both shoot very well and function flawlessly. Good luck with your M41.

Good shooting and be safe.

ps: Another alternative is the Marvel Unit 1 .22 conversion mounted on a 1911 frame. These conversions (Unit 1 ONLY) come with a test group and accuracy guarantee of 5 shots in less than 1 inch at 50 yds. My Unit 1 shoots as well as if not better than my M41 AND lets me shoot with the 1911 frame which would match your .45 class gun. Luckily my Unit 1 also likes the same two .22 ammo brands that my M41 likes.

I generally have better luck with consistant feeding with the copper coated bullets such as what Federal sells with semi-auto pistols. Don't have a Model 41, but I do have a High Standard Victor and a couple others.

Maybe I am just one of the lucky ones but mine does well with all 22 ammo even the cheapest bulk pack stuff from Winchester or Federal. The only time I have ever experienced problems is with trying to shoot high velocity stuff.

Mine shoots all of various match and std, velocity rounds I've tried. For club mathchs, it is hard to beat the CCI Std Velocity (which I believe is what LHB1 is referring to, as the CCI MiniMag is the antithesis of std velocity).

Thanks Treeprof,
Yes, I meant CCI Std Vel. Sorry about the confusion. Haven't been myself lately. Had a close relative die plus a very good friend has not awakened since heart surgery two weeks ago.

Good shooting and be safe.

Well It shoots very good and it feeds CCI Std Vel just fine I shot a 275 with it the other night. Now I need to find grips for it the one that is on it is just a little big for me any one have any ideas
Thanks for all your help so far..

Eley ammunition and Remington Eley does not work well at all in my Model 41.
CCI high velocity and standard solid points, Winchester Super X, T22, and Dynapoints, and Federal Champion work excellent and are plenty accurate.

CCI and RWS Pistol Match are best performers.

S&W recommends no high velocity in the 41

Where could I find proof of this...? My manual doesn't have it, and I've run over 5k round of Winchester Super-X High Velocity through my Model 41 in the last year. No problems at all.

My 1970

41 Likes CCI or Federal Champion but chokes on the fancy stuff. No matter; shoots very well with CCI or fed. When it chokes, it stovepipes; never fail to feed or extract.

I share that problem. My solution on current M41 was to remove factory grips and CAREFULLY remove some wood from the back and sides until the grips fit my hand better. Then I applied several coats of TruOil. BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT REMOVE TOO MUCH WOOD FROM THE BACK OF GRIP!!! If you cut thru the wood there is no metal backstrap underneath and the grips will be ruined.

Another alternative is buy grips from Herrett's Stocks. They have both production and custom style grips. You might like one of them. I used custom Herrett grips on my M41 years ago when shooting Bullseye comp.

Good shooting and be safe.

That's what I was told when I called about a balky feeder...they recommend CCI SV exclusively.

I have two that never object to CCI, will tolerate Federal 711B or 714 about 19/20 and Win T22 about 9/10. Remington's not even worth discussing. Failures are usually unreliable extraction.

My 5.5" M41 seems to shoot everything well, though I haven't tried the hyperfast stuff. CCI Green and Wolf Match do really well.

In terms of functioning, it seems to work well for the first couple of thousand rounds, then it requires a little cleaning.

My Model 41 shoots everything well, but the slide is heavy enough that low impulse ammo, like some subsonic stuff like RWS subsonic HPs, won't cycle the gun. Stuff with a little more impulse works fine, like the cheap Federal match stuff.
My Ruger MK II has a slightly lighter bolt than the M41 and cycles some stuff that the M41 won't, like the Russian stuff.

Herrett stocks

put them on my 41 right away. I'm a lefty. They are sized to your hand and very comfy. I checkered mine. See photo.

Thanks for all the help so far. Its hard to buy grips on looks alone so every time I see some one shooting with custom grips I have been asking many questions. I found a style of grips that are fantastic they are made by Randall Fung. Man they feel sweet they are pricey, maybe I can talk my wife into a nice Fathers day gift. If any one wants to look at them here is the web site. http://jnb.com/~funggrip/
