I have a 626-6 in 45 ACP I just bought used. I had the pistol disassembled with the side plate removed and (in retrospect stupidly) I dry fired the weapon to see the internal function without a snap cap in place. Out popped what appeared to be a small post which I believe was probably a retaining pin and was part of the frame hammer assembly. As I have searched around the web I see that these assemblies are prone to failure when dry firing, so I won't do that anymore.

I made a meager attempt to return the pin but it is not inserting fully so I stopped while I was behind. I am looking for:

1) Advice on what a comparable schematic would be, specifically, I need one that has a similar frame hammer assembly. Numrich does not have a detailed schematic for the 626.

2) Any other advice on working with these types of hammers (i.e., links to useful websites, previous posts, etc.). Thanks!

Most excellent! It is a 626-6, thanks for the link. I agree I will not do that again.

Oops, I see you linked me to 625-6. No it is definitely a 626-6. I can only find a very few references to a 626 on the web at all. Your comment about the pin sounds right though, I do recall seeing a flat along the pin so I'm sure that is what happened. Weird that the schematics jump from the 625s to the 627s though. My gun is marked 1989, there must not have been many produced. Thanks again.

Has to be a N-Frame stainless, Model of 1989, 625-6!

There is no such animal as a .45 ACP 626-6, or any other 626 in the Standard Catalog of S&W. Must really be a rare bird if they don't know about it!

A dash-six model would also mean there were 626's, 626-1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, & 5's.
But there weren't

I must give credit where credit is due. You were absolutely correct RCModel, I must have been hallucinating. It is a 625-6, the firing pin was slightly rotated not allowing the firing pin retaining pin to drop, and it is all better now. Thanks for taking the time to set me straight.
