hey i just purchased a used 6" stainless 357 model 686, does anyone know when they stopped installing the firing pin on the hammer. this is what Ive got on my revolver. ALSO does anybody know a site that lists serial numbers on smiths,to find dates of manufactor of revolvers. thanks chris

This might help if you can check one out @ a book store...The Standard Catalog of Smith + Wesson contains serial number and age of handgun information

The hammer mounted firing pin disappeared with the -5 in 1998.
