So, I'm in the market for a single-stack 9mm. However, I can't seem to figure out whether the safety on the Smith & Wesson 908S is a decocker or not, because if it isn't it would allow for cocked and locked carry. The Smith & Wesson website isn't too clear about whether it's a DA/SA with decocker, DA/SA with manual safety, or a DAO with manual safety. Which is it?

Like Airrascal said. SA/DA w/saftey-decocker. Rack the slide, push the lever down which decocks hammer and acts as a saftey. Push lever back up, ready for first double action shot.

Buy one. You will love it. Nice carry gun, slim. Great for IWB carry. Mine has been absolutely free of any problems.

Standard factory configuration is as Slinger said above. S&W can configure it so that the lever is decock only (decocker flips right back up to "fire" upon release) or DAO. Far as I know niether was ever offered on this model as shipped from the factory, but can be done after purchase. The 908 is/was S&W's value line version of their premium 3913 3rd generation gun. I have a 3913TSW pre-rail and these things are tack drivers (difference between 908 and 3913 is mostly cosmetic - quality and reliability is still there). 3913s were one of S&W's best sellers for a long time.

The safety lever on the slide, when pushed down, decocks the hammer (which also moves the trigger forward to its DA position) and disconnects the trigger linkage. To put it back in firing mode it has to be pushed back up. It is impossible to put this setup in a "cocked and locked" mode. Note also that the safety works in the opposite direction from the 1911.

I only use the safety on my 3913LS as a decocker anyway, so a "decock only" conversion sounds intriguing. I may look into that.
