For anyone considering an AR10 type rifle, I highly suggest checking into the M&P 10-absolutely fantastic rifle!

I had been interested in a semi-auto .308, either an M1A or AR10, but it was going to take too many $ to get accuracy wanted, or it was just too fricking heavy (why would I choose a rifle that weighs 10# before optics to hunt with????)

This rifle is very well made, very accurate (bullet through same hole accurate) and weighs close to the same as an AR15 (7.71#).
Configured to easily customize as desired on top of that.

It's become an instant favorite of mine and seriously can't think of any way to improve on mine (not there was anything "wrong" with factory, but I was able to customize it to exact way I wanted-American gold trigger, Vtac sling w/quick detatch swivels, MagPul ACS stock/MIAD grip, really cool looking Lancer carbon fiber free float handguard-weighs next to nothing too, Eotech EXPS-2 with Eotech quick magnifier/Weaver Super Slam 3x15 w illum reticle on Wilson quick detatch base).

Low recoil and extremely versatile-great at range and hunting rifle (watch out hogs!!!!)

I'm very interested in the M&P-10. One negative though - I hate the stupid railed gas block S&W installs on all of them.

A low-profile gas block that would allow you to easily install a free-float forearm (or even an F-marked FSB) makes so much more sense.

I really like mine so far. I've only put 80 or so rounds down range, but 60 of those were WWB and Tula steel cased, function has been flawless. The Nitrocarburized barrel was a big plus for me, all of my firearms would have that treatment if it was feasible. Also, I like the railed gas block, I intend to keep the Troy Battle sights on mine even after I pick up a longer range scope (SWFA SS 12x42?). Are most people using a cantilever mount for this kind of scope, or straight rail mount rings?

I love mine. Got one of the first ones (right place/right time). It think it is the only fully ambidextrous 7.62 out there. Optimized for P-mags. The upper is fully proprietary. Unique bolt and receiver extension. One guy on the S&W forum (Prairie) is working on modding a DPMS upper to fit to allow other barrel/caliber choices. I am following closely as I really want a .260 Rem.

Great gun for the M&P type role. Only shortcoming is non-pinned, non-dimpled gas block (clamp on).

I have a low profile adjustable gas block on mine and a Troy .308 rail (the one for DPMS low profile gives the closest but not perfect rail height). I bought it before the latest BS with Troy, btw.

The M&P10 is my new favorite of the .308 ARs. If I could sell my custom DPMS-based rig for anywhere close to the amount of money I have in it, I would do it and replace it with an M&P10. The M&P's barrel is pretty much my ideal battle rifle/hunting barrel... 18", lightweight profile, melonite treated, 5R rifled, 1/10 twist.

I think the M&P-10 is the best value for a 308 AR but it still needs work! The M4 style buttstock is too painful to deal with the recoil of the 308 and S&W clone of the Mosin bayonet- I mean the flash hider has got to go! I don't care for the oversized gas block either. Clamp on GBs have proven to be very rugged, however.

I like the the Big Smith. It's fun to shoot and is one of the first 308 ARs to come in at a reasonable weight. Still, with Magpul furniture, NF scope, sling and fully loaded 20 rnd Pmag, mine weighs 12 lbs 11 ozs

I've recently replaced the S&W flash hider with a Battlecomp BABC. That should knock a couple ounces of the weight and it shortened the rifle by a good inch!

When the budget allows, I will replace the MOE handguards with a compsite free float tube

Yep, if I manage to sell off my DPMS, I have a FSC30 comp that will be getting screwed on that new M&P as soon as it came out of the box! I would probably switch out the carbine stock for a Magpul fixed rifle stock setup... cheek weld on the carbine tube really sucks with a scope, which that kind of rifle would definitely be getting.

I also replaced the meat tenderizer with a Magpul CTR with extended rubber butt pad. Really soaks up the 7.62 recoil.

While I will be getting a free float tube, the rifle shoots well with the standard handguards. Barrel has a thicker profile under the hanguards which helps it deal with heat better.

The harsh shadow makes it hard to see the profile, but here's a photo showing the barrel of the M&P-10 with the furniture removed

Had my M&P 15-22 for a couple years now and love it. Maybe one of my favorite guns now, just pure fun. I put a Magpule stock, grip and sights on it.

that barrel looks toasty

On the lower rifle? It's a PSA carbine and I ran it hard to see how well a stainless steel barrel would hold up. After more than 3k rounds, I have yet to be disappointed

I thought it was introduced at the January 2013 shot show. I considered myself lucky to get one around the beginning of May.

I would free float it too, but I would do it with a 9" tube and leave the factory gas block on it. I like my front sight attached to the barrel, not floating independently of it; and sling attached to handguard. I frequently shoot slung up, and don't want sling pressure causing POI shifts. That's the main reason I free float my rifles in the first place.

I do not understand that you like the gun because it is light and you mod it to be lighter and say the recoil is painful. Cant have one without the other
