The gun looks attractive, right now its running against the Ruger 22/45 and Ruger SR22 as a first time .22lr pistol. Take down is easier than the 22/45 and its a full size pistol as opposed to the SR22's compact nature.

I'm willing to pay $100ish more for the M&P only thing I want to know is can it match the reliability of the 22/45? Can I feed the cheapest ammo around? And does it have any catastrophic failure issues like the SR22's take down lever issues?

Can any owners of this interesting .22 help me out?

Thanks much!

I don't own one, but you have no replies yet so...

My Dad has a friend who has an M&P-22 and an M&P 9mm Full size, and a 9mm Shield.

I have shot his M&P 9mm FS twice and .22 and Shield once, and short story, I was really impressed by all three.

The .22 felt just like the real thing, the trigger was even somewhat similar. It was 100% reliable over about 200 cheapo Blazer lead nosed bullets. The gun itself was of great quality, and the internals looked very solid, maybe even overbuilt. It has a 12 vs a 10 round mag, another plus. I loved shooting it. :D

The Ruger SR22s look good too, for the record. Haven't shot one.

My LGS sells the M&P 22s for like $350, not any more than a Ruger SR22 or Buckmark, so far as I know.

If you like the M&P , I would HIGHLY recommend an M&P-22. For the record, it's made by Umarex in Germany, and is Single Action with a manual safety as seen in some centerfire M&Ps.

I have an AMT Ruger .22 clone, and the take down on it is really bad. REALLY bad. It is also not at all styled after a modern pistol. I would give it an edge in accuracy though. Sorry, but I couldn't give you anything beyond a vague opinion as to reliability.

The three of them are each in a slightly different market:

22/45 is a target pistol and will most definitely last forever.
SR22 is a little plinker
M&P22 is a full-size replica plinker

I'm not sure if enough M&P22s have had a high round count yet to see how reliable and long-lasting they are.

Racking the slide on the mp22 was hilarious. Didn't even feel like there was a rsa in there lol.

IMO...

Ruger 22/45 > S&W/Umarex M&P-22 > Ruger SR-22

The S&W licensed Umarex M&P-22 is current the best tacticool .22LR pistol available, but it's still can't compare (in terms of reliability and accuracy) to the Ruger Mark III, Ruger 22/45 or Browning Buck Mark.

I have more than 5k rounds of Remington Gold through mine. Runs great. I think you will enjoy it.
