Smith & Wesson M&P Shield

You must have not noticed the dozens and dozens of threads on the gun on all the various gun forums for the past few weeks :D

I have one, and am searching for #2. The gun has much less felt recoil than other subcompact single stack 9mms. I had a Kahr PM9, and wanted something just a tiny bit bigger. To me, the Kahr P9 shot just like the smaller Pm9. Not an "enjoyable" gun to shoot.

I rented a Shield, though, and was hooked. Found one 2 days later. Sold my Kahr Pm9 the next week. Now, I want a second Shield.

Hell, I put 450 rounds through mine yesterday - it really does feel like you are shooting a larger gun.

I actually saw one for the first time yesterday and I may have to have one of them. They are nice and handle well. Feels good in the hand. Very slim compared to a Glock.

I intend to rent a Shield next week to see how I like it (or not). I couldn't stand the loooong trigger pull of the LC9, nor my finger getting squeezed so hard just before the sear let off. Now I look at those two pictures of the Kahr and Shield, and I'm just a little aprehensive; the trigger guard on the Shield looks smaller than the one on the Kahr. Will my (thick, muscular) trigger finger get squeezed again? Time will tell, and I'll tell all afterwards.

Look again beag... the Shield (on the bottom) has the larger of the two trigger guards. Plenty of space there I think.

...... and this thread was posted while I was composing my own 2 cents on the Shield, kind of ironic :D

I am a newbie here, but I should know the "search button is your friend"

I take it you bought the 9mm. I hear .40 ammo is real hard to get now.

How do you rent a gun? I knew you could rent most anything but not a guns .. I am near Bryan, Tx if someone knows of someplace... I did hear on a gun show something about renting guns at their range. Houston IIRC.

Any one seen one of these? I have smaller hands, so all the fat handle Glock and such guns do not work for me. Some 1911's are ok, but I am looking for something else, that is easier to concealed carry.

Be sure to look at M&P9c and .40 equivalent. I have smaller hands and the 9x19 with 12 round magazine felt better in my hand then the 'Shield'.

Go to Champion Firearms in College Station. You can rent guns there. They even have an M&P Shield 9mm for rent. (I shot it last week there :D)

As for the Shield, it's a fantastic gun. It's very easy to conceal and the grip is good sized. I think the grip is actually a tad bit longer than my M&P Compact. Either way it fills the hand nicely.

This may be the finest ccw automatic on the market atm imo. Trigger is good, feels good in hand. I want two of them badly.

Someone beat me to it. I live in College Station.

Go to the indoor range at Champion Firearms. I rented a Shield there - that's what got me hooked. Over the years, I have bought many guns I rented there first.

How is the safety on the shield? I have a full size M&P9, without a safety lever. Is there good purchase on that little safety lever?

How is the safety on the shield?

Very small. I wouldn't carry it with the safety on because I don't think it'd be easy to disengage in a hurry. I could see myself drawing it in an emergency situation and completely missing the safety.

I have slender piano fingers, and I find I can get a full three-fingered grip on the Shield, just barely. However, if you put your pinkie underneath the magazine, it's not really any harder to shoot.

I'm with Pablo on this one. Though there was nothing bad about the Shield, it just felt too skinny compared with 9c. Everyone's hand is different...

GunnerShotz:
I hope you're right about the trigger guard. My concern with the LC9 was the space behind the trigger. The Kahr shows a larger opening in the guard behind the trigger than the Shield does. But much depends on where the sear lets off. So I'm hoping that my concern, though very real, is groundless. That's what I get for bulding furniture for fifiteen years and resulting in thicker fingers.

Here is a pic of me holding the Shield. With the small magazine, the gun still works great:

I posted a review of the Shield and I show it next to the 9C in the video.

They are great pistols.

Shipwreck, you have small hands it would seem. You have your pinky almost completely supported by the grip. With my hands, my pinky just barely touches but isn't supported hardly at all. Regardless, I still find it comfortable to shoot.

Yes - on my PM9 I had (that I sold after I got the Shield) - my little finger hung off the gun. With this Shield and the small mag - even though my small finger isn't 100% on the bottom - its so close that it feels like I have my entire hand on it.

Just can't see carrying any gun that only holds 6 or 7 rounds except a .45 !!
I can only see point in that concept if it fits in avg. pocket like my LCP. In compact gun that requires a holster .45 single stack makes a lot more sense then something like 9Luger.

Why?

In actual shootings modern defensive 9mm loads perform just as well as the best .40 S&W and .45 ACP defensive loads.

If you like .45 ACP for nostalgic purposes, that's great - I do too. However, if you think it gives you a drastic improvement in terminal ballistics over other calibers such as .40 S&W or even 9mm, the data out there doesn't support that notion.

Most of the big name trainers are either shooting 9mm or are moving to 9mm (see the famous Rob Pincus article "why I was wrong"). With modern defensive loads the 9mm is every bit as effective as the other top autoloader calibers but has many advantages.

- higher capacity
- lower recoil
- smaller / lighter firearms in some cases
- lower cost of ammo = more training

It's something to think about anyway.

But I have my .45's (mostly 1911's) and love them. I just don't buy into the hoopla that the .45 ACP is a deathray. :D

I'd tend to agree with sturmgewehr on this one. I love my .45s and my Kimber 1911 will always be my "house gun," mostly because I shoot it amazingly well, but 9mm is just as valid of a caliber for SD. My carry guns are all 9mm, except for one in 357 Sig, and I don't feel undergunned with any of them.
